Preksha Dhyana: Therapeutic Thinking: [1] Mahāprāna Dhavani

Mahāprāṇa Dhavani is a slow, prolonged exhalation with a humming sound. It helps in building up of the foundation of the main meditational exercise. Its purpose is to build up an armourlike cover enveloping the practitioner, protecting him from the onslaught of evil influences of the external environment.

The following are some of the other benefits accruing from the practice of Mahāprāṇa Dhavani.

  1. It reinforces the efficiency of the neuronal activity of the brain.

For proper functioning of the brain, adequate supply of nourishment in the form of glucose and oxygen is necessary. Weight of the human brain is only 2% of the total weight of the body. But it needs 17% of cardiac output and 20% of oxygen of the total requirement of the body. These are carried by the hair - like capillaries of the blood-circulating system, which are highly susceptible to being blocked.

The vibration created by the Mahāprāṇa Dhavani removes any blocking if it is there, thus increasing the operative efficiency of the brain.

  2. It promotes concentration of mind by reducing its wandering.
  3. Regular practice enhances the memory-power.
  4. It subsides the internal turmoil.
  5. It promotes slow and deep breathing.

Instructions for Exercise

After a deep inhalation, the mouth is kept closed and a loud humming sound as that of a bee is produced through the nostrils during the prolonged exhalation. The process of building up of the protective cover is repeated loud intonation, producing a criss-cross of electro-magnetic radiations emanating from the sound waves thus produced.
