This year's lecture will be delivered by Prof Jayandra Soni of Innsbruck University, Austria on "JAIN ETHICS IN PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE"
This lecture will be held at the Graham Center Ballroom, Modesto Maidique campus, 11200 SW 8th Street, Florida International University, Miami on Monday, 30th March 2015 at 6.30 pm.
Free Parking is available in the VIP parking Lot and the local Jain community will host a complimentary vegetarian dinner after the talk.

Jain Ethics in Philosophical Perspective
Lecture by Jayandra Soni, Innsbruck University, Austria

The Jain theory of karma posits that all of our actions - in thoughts, words and deeds - rebound on us as meritorious or unmeritorious ‘seeds’ which then ripen at the appropriate time. We then enjoy or suffer the ‘fruits’ of our previous actions, in some cases only after several lifetimes. How do Jains account for this predicament? What is the ‘Jain path of purification’? Why do Jains view moral conduct as key to spiritual salvation? What relevance do Jain ethics hold for attaining liberation? Dr. Jayandra Soni’s lecture will reflect on the Jain story of the person trapped in a well to discuss these questions.
Born and brought up in South Africa where he did his schooling and BA (1972), Jayandra Soni studied further in India (PhD, Banaras Hindu University, 1978) and Canada (PhD, McMaster University, 1987). He taught Indian languages and philosophy at the Phillips-University Marburg in Germany from 1991-2012. After retiring from Germany, he moved to Austria and is a part-time lecturer of Indian philosophy in the Philosophy Department at Innsbruck University. He has written numerous articles on Jain philosophy and edited books on Jainism.
