Chhah Gau Yatra, March 10, 2017

Chhah Gau Yatra is a journey of about 16 kms in pilgrim town Palitana in the Bhavnagar district.
It is mainly a kind of penance that helps a devout set off the evil results of past deeds and
makes his journey to Nirvana or salvation faster and shorter, say Jain saints and scriptures.

Over the year the Chhah Gau Yatra is becoming more popular and lacks of pilgrims visit on this single day.

Chhah Gau Yatra starts from Jap Taleti on the foothills of Shatrunjaya and ends on the other side at a place known as Siddhavad.

The name Siddhavad is after a Banyan tree here and it is said thousands of Jains have achieved the final stage of life-death cycle, Nirvana or salvation and become free from the bondage of Karma.
The Chhah Gau Yatra covers all Jain temples in Palitana. Siddhavad is near Adipur, known as the birth place Lord Adinath the first Thirthankar.

It is believed that every Jain should visit Palitana at least once in his lifetime to get “Bhavya” status (fit to attain nirvan or salvation).

There are a total of 1250 temples located on the Shetrunjaya hills, exquisitely carved in marble.
The main temple on top of the hill, is dedicated to 1st tirthankar lord Adinath (Rishabdeva).
This year, the auspicious day of Chhah Gau Yatra begins on March 10, 2017.

Research Survey For Hypertension in Indian Women

Aneri Shah, a 11th grader at Minnetonka High School in Minnesota is currently taking part in a research class in her high school in which students conduct their own research project. Her project is a comparative study that focuses on the prevalence and biological risk factors of hypertension between Indian females who have high blood pressure (hypertension) in India and in the United States.

She has created a survey that includes questions regarding the participant's medical history, diet, physical activity, and other lifestyle factors and specific questions related to high blood pressure. To receive efficient results, she needs enough participants to perform a data analysis. Her goal is to find at least 70-100 participants from both India and the US.

JCSC is hosting a Health Fair on March 12th.  Any Indian females who come to the health fair,  who are above the age of 30 and have high blood pressure and are willing to participate in this study can do so. Attached is the survey link below. Also attached is an informed consent form that includes the details about her project, and it requires the participants’ signature. She cannot take any responses into consideration without the consent of the participant. If they cannot fill this survey online, she can send them the paper copy or take their responses over the phone too.Her school is very strict about data privacy. This project has been reviewed and accepted by the International Human Subjects Review Board, and it ensures that no personal information or data will be shared with anyone or disclosed in any paper.

She hopes to use the data collected to perform a statistical analysis and find similarities and differences between hypertensive Indian females in both countries. With the help of this research she would like to learn more about this disease pattern with other ethnicities who have immigrated to the U.S as well.  There has been a strong correlation of blood pressure with obesity indicators, lifestyle and health factors and there is a lack of evidenced based research in this area. With my project, I hope to learn how to bridge the gap in understanding of this disease and provide a broader perspective for Indian women worldwide.
In Minnesota, Aneri Shah is actively involved in the Jain Center community and is also a part of the Youth Committee there. She is also actively involved in Patshala as well as helps plan the curriculum and teach about our Jain traditions and culture. Her goal is to connect both her science interests with culture in order to help our community.

If you have any questions about her project and want to know more, please feel free to email her at  ANERI SHAH <[email protected] or via phone call on 952-456-2034.
