2. QUOTE

The unenlightened takes millions of lives to extirpate the effects of karma whereas a man possessing spiritual knowledge and discipline obliterates them in a single moment.

4. STORY OF NAVPAD OLI

Prince Shripal and his mother had to go into hiding after the death of his father due to his evil Uncle. During their travels in far off places including forests they came into contact with a group of lepers. After living with them for a few days the Prince became affected by leprosy. His distraught mother left to find a cure for him and left him at the care of the lepers. The Lepers made Shripal their king.

Unlike her sister, Princess Mainasundari had hurt the ego of her father who was a powerful King. She had claimed that only Karmas and deeds decide your fate and not the king. The king was enraged and wanted to teach Maina a lesson. He got his chance when the lepers and Shripal arrived in the court. The Lepers demanded a bride for their king. The king married off Mainasundari to Shripal despite protests by Maina’s mother.

Mainasundari had great faith in Jain Dharma. She took her husband along with the lepers, to a monk named Munichandra for the cure. He suggested them to perform the Siddhachakra Mahapuja which included a particular type of fasting known as Navpad Ayambil Oli for a period of 9 days. Eventually, all of them including Shripal got cured due to the power of Ayambil.

Jains perform Ayambil Navpad for nine days to salute the nine supreme beings in the universe. Ayambil is special type of fast in which people can eat only boiled grains that too once in a day. It is not permitted to add anything that has salt/sugar/oil to the boiled grains. It is one of the most challenging fasts of Jainism.

Ayambil Oli Vidhi:
Ayambil Oli this year is from Friday, March 23rd thru Saturday, March 31st. Find the daily Ayambil Oli Vidhi by clicking "Read More" below.

5. IMPORTANCE OF AYAMBIL

Jains observe Festival of Navpad Oli that last for nine days, twice a year. The first one falls in the bright fortnight of Ashwina month (September/October) and the second during the bright fortnight of Chaitra month (March/April). It is exactly between Shukla Saptami (Seventh lunar day) to Purnima (Full moon day) in both Ashwina and Chaitra months. Navpad Oli starts in the middle of Navratri, Hindu festival of India. Both of Navpad Oli falls among five Shaswata Atthai of Jain. Rests of three Atthai are Chaturmasik Atthai (thrice in a year).

Jain performs Ayambil Tapa for nine days to salute these nine supreme posts in the universe. Ayambil is special type of fast in that one eats only boiled grains that too once in a day. It is not permitted to add anything including salt/sugar/oil to the boiled grains. Hence, it is very difficult for a layman to perform Ayambil Tap.

6. VEERAYATAN'S FREE MEGA EYE CAMP IN RAJGIR, BIHAR

Veerayatan organizes an Eye Camp every year for one week from 23 January to 30 January, when most eye treatments and cataract operations provided to patients are free of cost. This allows the very poor to have their eyes treated of their ailments, which otherwise would be beyond the financial reach of most patients.

Veerayatan is performing eye surgeries which started during the early years when Veerayatan was establishing a presence in Bihar. The first eye camp was organised in 1974 when 250 operations were performed.

7. PARSHVA JINALAY CELEBRATIONS

One year after the magnificent opening ceremonies for the Parshva Jinalay, this beautiful and serene place of worship within the peaceful setting of the Veerayatan Rajgir campus has quickly become very appealing for everyone visiting the campus. The Parshva Jinalay is having a transformative effect on everyone, and all are encouraged to make effort to visit the Jinalay and show our deepest reverence to Parshvanath Bhagwan, Mahavir Bhagwan, and Rishabhdev Bhagwan.

8. JAIN AYAMBIL RECIPE
PLAIN DOSA

Ingredients:
  • 1-1/2 cups rice
  • 1/2 cup urad dal washed
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
Method:
  1. Wash rice and dal changing water three to four times. Soak rice mix and fenugreek seeds in about 4 cups of water for at least six hours.
  2. In a blender, blend the rice and dal mix to very creamy texture. Use only as little water as needed to blend. Using too much water for blending will not give the desired creamy texture. Use the same water dal was soaked to grind the batter as that helps in fermentation.
  3. Cover and ferment the batter in a warm place. Batter will be about one and half time in volume.
  4. When ready to make dosa whip the batter for few seconds. Add water as needed, batter should be pourable, or like pancake consistency.
  5. Place a non-stick- heavy skillet over medium heat. Test by sprinkling a few drops of water on it. The water should sizzle right away.
  6. Cook till the dosa turns brown in color and crisp. At this point flip the dosa using a flat spatula, for about 15 seconds.
  7. Dosa is ready, repeat with remaining batter. Every time wipe the skillet with wet towel that helps spreading the dosa.
