RSVP During Paryushan

All Paryshan events (Ekasana and Swamivatsalya) will require RSVP. This is the Jain way as we wish to avoid wasting food. We have simplified the process and details will be published soon. It will be something similar to airline boarding where RSVP response will be an unique QR code and we will scan the QR code during Ekasana/Swamivatsalya and we will know who were the no-shows.

Wellness Challenge - Eat Millets

In this week's challenge you must “Eat Millets”. Millets are traditional grains, grown in semi-dry areas of Asia and Africa. Millets have been widely cultivated as cereal crops or as fodder for animals. They are highly nutritious, rich in fiber and gluten-free, making them easy for the body to absorb. They are rich in a huge spectrum of micronutrients, including calcium, iron, phosphorus, etc. They are also slow digesting foods which don’t cause the huge spike in blood sugar which is caused by eating polished rice, therefore, millets help with preventing and controlling diabetes. Millets should ideally be an integral part of your daily diet. They add variety and balance to your food. They can replace white rice in all your meals. You can start by mixing millets into rice and slowly make one meal a day a Millet meal. Some people have found enormous benefits, especially in controlling weight and diabetes, by switching completely from a rice and wheat diet to a millet based diet. 3) Vegan Recipe Book by Anjali Lalani

Below is her presentation for the lecture she gave at the YJA convention in Los Angeles a few years back. It was meant to be an insight into moving towards the vegan direction when it comes to diet. Geared towards the younger generation, taking them through the transition, diet, and recipes. She spoke on the slides a great deal so check out the notes section under each slide for more details. It's also animated in slideshow view. I did not focus on the ethical, health, or environmental aspect of veganism because I was told that there were other lectures at JYA that dealt with those topics.

Attached is an excel sheet put together on vegan product substitutes. Few things to note:
  • She put them into categories, stores you can find them at, and any notes she had
  • She has tried all of these products at some point or another
  • There are MANY vegan brands now, so she listed the top substitutes and her favorite ones
  • These products are vegan, but not necessarily JAIN. I believe Seema was going to check which ones also fit the JAIN diet.
  • For the store location, please note that not all Ralphs or Whole Foods are identical. They stalk brands and products based on demand, so use that column as a guideline, but check your local stores.

And if any of you are wondering...yes she keeps 3 different SILK plant-based milks in the fridge all the time for different uses. She listed out other options as well since people's taste buds differ.

Hopefully this list helps. If you have any other questions at all, please don't hesitate to reach out. If she forgot a category, let her know and she will add it in.

4) An article on Jain Understanding Of Liberation

Below is an article by Ana Bajzelj on the Jain understanding of liberation or more specifically... of the travel that the Siddha makes to Siddha-Loka. This article has been published by the prestigious Journal of Hindu Studies, published by the Oxford University Press. It is wonderful that they wanted to include a Jain perspective in a journal that usually covers only Hinduism.

If you would like to read the article, here is the link where you can access it for free and download the PDF:

In June, Ana also presented a paper on the Jain notion of causality at the 51st Annual Conference of the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy in Bath, UK.
