Publisher's Note

Shri Raj Krishna Jain Charitable Trust, New Delhi, was founded in 1940 in the name of Shri Raj Krishna Jain, an eminent religious, social worker and philanthropist, with the purpose of extending liberal help to religious, social and educational institutes, to deserving scholars, for publishing worthy books, for instituting Annual Lecture Series (at Delhi University with permanent Reserve Fund of Rs. 50,000/-) for providing annual scholarships to deserving students of Jainism (Jaina Shisya vrtti at the Department of Jainology, University of Mysore) and for any philanthropic cause arising from time to time.

Shri Prem Chand Jain, the only son of Shri Raj Krishna Jain, ably executed most of the plans and aims of the Trust. Now his three sons, Shri Bharat Bhushan Jain (Advocate), Shri Desh Bhushan Jain (Physician) and Shri Dharma Bhushan Jain (Chartered Accountant) are managing the Trust with all faith and sincerity.

In the course of its manifold philanthropic activities, now the Trust is quite pleased to publish the book of Dr. B. K. Khadabadi, viz., DR. A. N. UPADHYE, HIS LIFE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS. Dr. A.N. Upadhye was a great scholar of Prakrit, Jainology and Indology, who flourished with international reputation. Many aspects of his life and accomplishments depicted in this book would certainly inspire research institutes, University Departments and individual scholars of the present and future generations. Dr. B.K. Khadabadi is also an acknowledged scholar in this field and he was also a close and trusted student of Dr. Upadhye for decades, and, hence, can speak and write about his teacher with authority and certainty.

We hope this small but important book, originally meant for a Lecture Series at Mysore and Karnatak Uni-versities, would be widely received by the world of schol¬ars and general readers in India and abroad.

Lastly we are thankful to Dr. Khadabadi for giving this work to us for publication. We also thank the propri¬etors of Manohar Printing Press, Dharwad, for their nice and timely printing work of this book.
