Das Zentrum für Jaina Studien (Center for Jaina Studies) am Fachbereich für Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften und  die Abteilung Kunstgeschichte Südasiens des Kunsthistorischen Instituts lädt ein zu einem Vortrag über die kanaresische Literatur im südlichen Indien unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Jaina Religion:

Importance of Kannada Literature with special reference to Jainism

Prof. em. Dr. Nagarajaiah, Hampa, one of the major litterateurs of Karṇaṭaka, has authored more than 80 books in Kannada and English. His writings, spread over four decades, cover a wide range of topics embracing different disciplines and fields of research. Some of his books have been translated into English, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Rajasthani, Tamil, Tulu, and Telugu. He has taught under-graduate and post-graduate classes for over 38 years. He has served Kannaḍa Sāhitya Parishat, 95 year old premier literary Institute in Karṇaṭaka, as General Secretary as well as President. With 'hampanā' as his nom de plume, he is a recipient of a number of State and National Awards. Contemporary literati have honoured him with seven festschrifts. SVASTI, the eighth Felicitation Volume, brought out on his 75th Birthday, has been edited by Prof. Nalini Balbir, University of Paris, France.

Dr. Nagarajaiah has presented papers at the National and International Congresses and Symposia and delivered Endowment and Foundation Lectures in various universities. The presidentship of the International Conference on Jainism, 2010, at Mysore is the crowning glory of his scholastic journey.

He is also a Member on the Advisory Board of the Centers for Jaina Studies in the Universities of  Berlin, London, and Miami. His contribution to the study of Jainology in particular is significant and seminal.

On June 27th, 2012, after welcomed by Prof. Zin, Prof. Gail and Patrick Krueger, Prof. Hampana gave a lecture on "Importance of Kannada Literature with special reference to Jainism" at Center for Jaina Studies (CFJS) of Freie Universität Berlin.

After giving a lecture Prof. Hampana visited the collections of Berlin Museum of Asian Art, which is located nearby.

In the afternoon Prof. Hampana left Berlin to travel to Bonn university, where he attended the opening ceremony of Pianarosa library.

We all, teaching staff as well as students of South Asian Art History Center and Center for Jaina Studies of Freie Universität Berlin, spent a very nice time with Prof. Hampana. We are grateful for his visit and the interesting lecture he gave. Thank you so much, Prof. Hampana!
