"Jewels of Jain World" Award

Jain World Foundation USA is pleased to announce the 2012 Jewels of Jain World Award. This award, announced on Diwali day of 2013 is conferred on:

Prof. Dr. Padmanabha Jaini, USA

Padmanabh Shrivarma Jaini is an India born scholar of Jainism and Buddhism, currently living in Berkeley, USA. He has taught at the Banaras Hindu University, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and at the University of California at Berkeley, from where he retired in 1994. Professor Jaini is the author of several books and papers. His best known work is The Jaina Path of Purification (1979). Some of his major articles have been published under titles: The Collected Papers on Jaina Studies (2000) and Collected Papers on Buddhist Studies (2001). He is recipient of several awards and honors.

Dr. Hukumchand Bharill, India

Dr. Bharill is one of our most accomplished Jain scholars of our time with a unique vision for the development of Jainism and has dedicated his entire life for the cause of Jainism. He has authored numerous books on Jainism and strives to propagate Jainism with vigor and fervor all over the world. He is accomplished editor, professor and has been guiding several institutions. He is recipient of several awards and honors.

Dr Hampa Nagarajaiah, India

Hampa Nagarajaiah is an eminent scholar on Jainism. Popularly known as Hampana. He served in capacities like professor and dean of arts faculty before retiring in 1996. Hamapna has delivered guest lectures at renowned western universities. He is recipient of several awards and honors. He has written over 60 books in Kannada and 11 in English. He was the president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, director of Jain Research Institute and Institute of Jain Studies, Shravanabelagola.


Dr. Peter Flügel UK

Dr Peter Flügel (MA Dr Phil (Mainz)) is an expert in Jainism and has done textual work and fieldwork. He is the Chair of the Centre for Jaina Studies and a member of the Centre for South Asian Studies and the SOAS Food Studies Centre. Apart from Jaina studies, he has broad interests in religion and society, social anthropology, sociology, philosophy and Indology more broadly. He is instrumental in increasing the visibility of Jainism globally by organizing several seminars and guiding students in the study of Jainism over the years. Severed as editor of The International Journal of Jain Studies and conducted several Jain Study workshops.

Prof. Dr. Sagarmal Jain, India

Prof. Dr. Sagarmal Jain is M.A., Ph.D. in philosophy, was Director of Parshwanath Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, India. He has held several academic positions; and over 25 Ph.D. degrees have been awarded under his supervision. He has authored more than 25 books and 150 research articles; edited 160 books; and participated in numerous seminars in India and all over the world. He is the General Editor of the Encyclopedia of Jaina Studies.
