Cruelty is a major obstacle in the development of morality.
If cruelty is washed away and compassion replaces it, less effort is required to improve one's moral fibre.

Compassion and amity are the practical manifestations of ahimsa (non-violence).
In their absence, Ekbrahma or advaita's principles, the ability to experience the pain and pleasures of all mankind, all these remain only verbal expressions of the principles of Jain philosophy; it is of no use in life.
