The Southbank Centre in London has organised a festival in 2017 called Belief and Beyond Belief. Young Jains is working with the Southbank Centre to lead and co-ordinate the involvement of the Jain community into this series of events to bring further awareness of Jain dharma and culture to the UK and potential seekers.
There are two exciting talks that we would like to tell you about at this stage. Date: Sunday 22nd January 2017 Venue: Southbank Centre Time: 2.30 - 3.30pm Title of talk: Bites A series of short talks will include Samani Pratibha Pragyaji on her personal journey of becoming a Jain nun and her spiritual journey, alongside a range of speakers. She is an ordained nun in Terapanth Jains for 27 years and finishing her PhD in Jainism. Time: 4:00 - 5:00pm Title of talk: "What if God was a woman?" Debate whether the case of women in religion has progressed from ancient to present times. Samani Unnat Pragyaji will be joining the debate sharing the Jain perspective. She is an ordained nun for 13 years and pursuing her PhD in Jainism. There are lots of other events over the weekend. International Summer School for Jain Studies 2017 Applications for the International Summer School for Jain Studies 2017 now open. The application deadline is February 28th 2017. The International Summer School for Jain Studies (ISSJS) is a 4-6 week academic course based in India providing a solid grounding in Jain history, philosophy and sociology. Open to students, scholars, teachers and anyone else with a serious interest in Jainism, the course is taught by leading academics in India and Europe. The three, four and six week long, stand alone and separate intensive courses in ISSJS 2017 will entail morning lectures, afternoon field trips and visits to some schools. The course also involves opportunities to meet ascetics from both the Swetambar and Digambar traditions, and is split between Delhi, Jaipur and Varanasi and other Indian cities. It is an experiential and India based program and makes India a classroom for the study of ahimsa /nonviolence, Jain, history culture and philosophy. External Events Shishukunj Dance-a-thon: 12th February 2017 Get fit, have fun and dance like you have never danced before at our Dance-a-thon to raise money for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice and Shishukunj London! It will be taking place on Sunday 12th February at London Academy in Edgware. We invite you, your family and your friends to take on the challenge of dancing for 2 hours (5-13 year olds) or 5 hours (14 years old +) whilst taking a journey around the world. You will experience a mix of different styles of dance including Gaana, Swing, Bhangra and African taught by professional dance teachers. You don’t need any dance experience to take part and it is open to people of all ages and abilities, so put on your dancing shoes and come along!
