About
Michael Zimmermann is professor for Indian Buddhism at the Asia Africa Institute of Hamburg University and Director of the University's Center for Buddhist Studies. His studies of Indology, Tibetology and Japanology at the Universiy of Hamburg were followed by a Ph.D. passed with summa cum laude. Zimmerman's research interests include the Mahayana-Buddhism, Tibet and China as well as questions related to Buddhist Ethics, such as the Buddhist attitude towards governance and violence.
Michael Zimmermann has lived and worked in Japan, Nepal and the US. He directed the Nepal Research Centre in Kathmandu from 2002-2003 and was the director of the Stanford Center for Buddhist Studies as well as assistant professor of Buddhist Studies at Stanford University before he was appointed professor for Indian Buddhism at the University of Hamburg in 2007. Zimmermann has been awarded several prices, including the award “Fellowship of the International Research Institute for advanced Buddhology” at Soka University, Tokio, in the year 1999.
