Tithi

Sanskrit, fem. Lunar day contrary to the civil solar day.

The lunar orbit is divided into thirty identical parts in the lunar month. The period when one thirtiest of the lunar orbit has been passed through is one tithi. The duration of a tithi is varying, for the moon seems to move in different speed because of its elliptic orbit. One solar day may contain two or three lunar days.
