Lothar Lutze taught at the Heidelberg University, South Asia Institute, SAI from 1965 to 1992. He was a passionate lover of literature, and widely recognized as a translator of modern literature in Hindi, Bengali, and other South Asian Languages. Lothar Lutze was awarded with the Tagore- as well with the George-Grierson-Prize. For his outstanding contributions to literature and education he received the Padma-Shri-Award in 2006. Under his direction, numerous well-known authors from South Asia found their way to HD. He is fondly remembered by many of his students as a compelling university teacher.
