Abstract of Paper:

Peace, Humanity and Spirituality: Towards 21st Century

Dr. Subhash Chandra

The world has witnessed dramatic changes in the 20th Century. Humanity is facing a terrible challenge of its own existence. The whole human life is in a state of turmoil because modern civilization is based on violence.

The beginning of the 21st century has witnessed the eruption of serious social, cultural and political unrest and conflict worldwide.  The almost unprecedented economic crisis is likely to increase the turmoil and compound the complexity of finding solutions. Today’s society seems more fragmented and unstable than ever.

Humanity faces challenges of unprecedented proportions in areas such as continual development of mass destruction of weapons, wars & conflicts between the states & ethnic groups fighting over the religious fundamentalism, discrimination, the spread of racism, and the widening gap between the rich and poor due to globalization.

Poverty is a potential threat to humanity. The elimination of the poverty is as urgently necessary as the elimination of the threat from nuclear weans, for poverty, the widening gap between rich & poor, is clearly a direct threat to world peace.

With the advent of the year 2001, we have entered into new century and new millennium but the humanity is standing at the crossroad of all the transition process.

The biggest agenda of 21st century is 'How to save the Humanity'?

Human values are eroding at very fast rate resulting in declining the quality of life of the people. At the dawn of the new millennium, what is required most is ‘Peace & Humanity’.Cultural & Values education play an important role in building peace & harmony and also developing nonviolent global sustainable society.

The presentation of paper on “Peace, Humanity and Spirituality: Towards 21st Century” is based on spiritually guided holistic approach of developing peace consciousness for World Peace & Human Unity. The paper has attempted to highlight the global recognition of Peace as a matter of common concern to save the Humanity. The paper also tries to explain dimensions of human development and ‘5Ps - Model of Holistic Human development for building Peace & harmony & developing nonviolent global harmonic society. The paper is divided into three parts:

  • Part I - Introduction - Modern Civilization & World Crisis;Challenges in 21st century.
  • Part II - Dehumanization & division of humanity. Human dimensions & concept of humanity; Major threats to humanity; Human development dimensions; UN Millennium development goals.

  • The part III - Concept of ‘Shanti (Peace)’, Role of Spirituality & Spiritual Unity; Levels of Human consciousness and Holistic Human development; Unity for humanity & ‘SHANTI’ Model for Human Transformation for     building World Peace and Oneness of humanity.
