Sanskrit: श्लोक (śloka)

  • The word shloka ("song") is derived from the Sanskrit root śru ("hear") and means in the Sanskrit poetry a category of measure (four-line verse).
      
  • The shloka is the usual verse line in the classical Sanskrit poetry and is also the measure of the two epics Mahabharata and Ramayana.
