The University of North Texas (UNT) is a public institution of higher education and research in Denton. Founded in 1890, UNT is part of the University of North Texas System. As of the fall of 2010, the University of North Texas, Denton campus, had a certified enrollment of 36,067. Of the 77 senior colleges and universities in the state (38 public and 39 independent), the enrollment at University of North Texas Denton campus is fourth largest, behind The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, and the University of Houston.
