  • The city is situated near the left bank of the Narmada River, and is the administrative headquarter of Barwani District.
  • It has served as the capital of the former princely state of Barwani.

About 8 km southwest of Barwani is Bawangaja Shri Digamber Jain Siddha Kshetra Chulgiri situated.
