And, 2013 in Malaysia
As you know, IVU has gone from having a Vegfest/Congress every two years to having one every year, rotating among the continents. 2013 is Asia’s turn, and IVU member, the Malaysia Vegetarian Society has stepped forward to organise the event. As a result, in 2013, the 41st IVU World Congress/Vegfest will combine with the 6th Asian Veg Congress, hosted by the Malaysian Vegetarian Society.
The current plan calls for events in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Malaysia is green in the map of SE Asia), the nation’s capital, 3-6 October, and then on to Penang, in the north of Malaysia, 8-9 October. Those attending the 2012 IVU Vegfest/Congress in North America will see a DVD introducing Malaysia and providing a preview of the 2013 event. We'll try to get that on Youtube for everyone else to see.
Life As A Teenage Vegetarian
Here are two pieces written by teenagers describing how they deal with meat eaters. The first is by Shelby Jackson, an intern with the Vegetarian Resource Group - www.vrg.org Sometimes, social pressures make being vegetarian a struggle. Growing up in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, USA amidst a family of ranchers and a high school swarming with Future Farmers of America enthusiasts, veganism often set me apart from the rest of my community. Though it was difficult at the beginning, I would soon learn some tricks of the trade that would allow me to politely confront aggressive oppositions to my lifestyle choices. Upholding and smartly promoting vegetarianism began to feel natural and easy, and my assured confidence allowed me to persevere through the most heated of confrontations....

30 Activities Your High School Veg Group Can Do
This article was compiled by Shelby Jackson, the Vegetarian Resource Group intern whom we read about above.
Starting a vegetarian club in high school is a powerful way to spread the word about the nutritional benefits, animal rights issues and the ecological advantages of vegetarianism. Bringing together individuals with similar ideas and interests makes advocating more enjoyable and productive. When it comes to activism, numbers are important. Every person brings something new and different to the table. Having a multitude of diverse perspectives and skills is valuable when it comes to formulating and executing successful advocacy efforts....

Recommended Nutrition Resources
It is not easy to find good advice on nutrition. Even vegetarian nutritionists disagree, and new research may change the advice nutritionists offer. Here are some suggested resources from www.theveganrd.com/resources.
Among the suggested resources are the recommendations of Dr Michael Greger - http://nutritionfacts.org/2011/09/12/dr-greger%E2%80%99s-2011-optimum-nutrition-recommendations which begin as follows:
The balance of scientific evidence suggests that the healthiest way to eat is a vitamin B12-fortified diet of whole plant foods. For optimum nutrition, we should be sure to include in our daily diet not only an array of whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, fruit, and as many vegetables as we can eat, but also specifically dark green leafy vegetables, berries, and white (or green) tea.
Other resources not included in the above list include the suggestions of Dr Caldwell B Esselstyn, Jr: www.heartattackproof.com No doubt, many other good resources exist.
This Month’s HCYKTASEM Article
To vegetarians like us, the evidence for moving away from meat seems overwhelming. Each new report just makes it seem more incredible that all the intelligent, knowledgeable meat eaters we know can continue with their destructive habit.
This month’s How Can You Know This And Still Eat Meat (HCYKTASEM) article is from the Guardian newspaper: www.guardian.co.uk/global-development/2012/aug/26/food-shortages-world-vegetarianism?newsfeed=true - The article is titled ‘Food shortages could force world into vegetarianism, warn scientists’. Here’s an excerpt:
An international water expert predicts that by 2050.
"There will be just enough water if the proportion of animal-based foods is limited to 5% of total calories and considerable regional water deficits can be met by a … reliable system of food trade".
Healthy, Collegial Debate about Health
There are many powerful reasons for moving away from meat. The most frequently espoused reasons include health, environment, concern for our fellow animals, world hunger and spirituality. Is one reason better than others? There has been some debate about this of late.

‘Ten Billion Lives’ Documentary
October 2nd is World Farm Animals Day -- a day to remember the over 65 billion farmed animals killed for human consumption every year (10 billion in the U.S. alone). It's also a time to invite others to open their hearts and minds so we can stop the unnecessary horror.
FARM's (Farm Animal Rights Movement www.farmusa.org) new video 10 Billion Lives challenges viewers to see for themselves the abuses inherent to animal agribusiness. It concludes with an opportunity to pledge to replace animal products with more plant-based foods.
Be a part of the Online Video Challenge by sharing the video on Facebook, Twitter, or email. If you show the video to the most people, you'll win a Vitamix blender or a US$1000 grant for your organization!
Here’s the link to watch the free video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtWO83pf3Mc Caution: Contains graphic images of standard animal agribusiness practices.
‘Sea the Truth’ Documentary
The state of our oceans and seas is the main focus in “Sea the Truth” www.youtube.com/watch?v=V325y7QCg3c. Leading scientists such as Daniel Pauly suggest that if we continue to catch and eat fish at the current rate, the oceans and seas will be empty within 40 years. The hunt for fish is an economic monster on the run: large bottom trawlers are scraping the bottoms of the seas empty, taking with them all living things with destructive force. The massive amount of bycatch is thrown back into the sea, maimed or dead.
This documentary was made by the same people in the Netherlands, from the Party for the Animals, who made ‘Meat the Truth’ about the effects of meat on the environment: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uTJsZrX2wI
