Mahavira's Scripture Of Health: [09.09] Food And Health - Vritti-Samkshepa

Published: 04.06.2007

The third way of penance or of health is vritti-samkshepa, which is widely practised by the followers of the Jain tradition. The number of items to be eaten can be limited in many ways. A person can decide not to take more than five items and not to eat some particular items on particular days. Alternatively, he may decide to eat only one item on a particular day or not to eat or drink anywhere except in certain houses. This kind of vritta-samkshepa gives protection against many illnesses.
