Jains divide each sense-organ (indriya) into
- (bhāvendriya) sense-organ qua psychical i.e. the ablity of the soul to have various sensuous experiences
- sense-organ qua physical (dravyendriya), i.e. the physical sense-organ.
The senses:
touching
- Sparsh-indriya
tasting
- Rasana-indriya
smelling
- Ghrana-indriya
seeing
- Chakshu-indriya
hearing
- Shtotra-indriya
Beings (jiva) differ in number of sense organs:
One-sensed
(touch)
earth, water, fire, air and plants.
Two-sensed
(touch and taste)
worms, oysters, insects, etc.
Three-sensed
(touch, taste, smell)
ants, flies, bugs etc.
Four-sensed
(touch, taste, smell, colour)
flies, mosquitoes, honey-bees, locusts, scorpions etc.
Five-sensed
(touch, taste, smell, colour, sound)
fish, crocodile, cow, buffalo, snake, bird, human beings etc.
