Sunday May 6, 2007 - 9am to 6pm
Professional Bay Area (San Fransisco CA) Jains presents Pravin K. Shah, JAINA Education Committee, leading an interactive workshop in which we will apply the fundamentals of Jainism to real life challenges. This type of workshop has been extremely well received by the young Jain audiences across the US who have participated in it over the last decade.The workshop will be conducted in English and focuses on Jains aged 21-45, to address the challenges of life as young professionals, balancing family, career and spiritual growth. We will also consider applicants outside this age range if space permits.
In this workshop, we’ll explore:
- The role of Jains in relation to the larger society as seen through our stories, art and architecture and consider our own place as modern Jains in the U.S.
- Fundamentals of Jainism including the workings of karma in how we choose our thoughts, words, and action;
- Ahimsa as it relates to our impact on the environment
- The truth of multiplicity of viewpoints (Anekantvad) and how to apply it in our interactions with others;
- The importance of Aparigraha, detachment from possessiveness, for peace of mind and social harmony
- The stages of spiritual development, as defined traditionally by gunasthanaks, compared to our experiences of our own mind states; and
- The role of practices such as seva (service), yoga and meditation, in the stories of our famous teachers, as well as in our own lives
There will be plenty of time for group Q&A and individual questions, so feel free to bring your own questions!
