About

Kannada: ಗೊಮ್ಮಟೇಶ್ವರ gommaṭēśvara

Gommateshvara, i.e. the "lord of the hilltop" (derived from gommata 'hilltop' and ishvara 'lord') is a synonym for Bahubali images.

The term is referred in an inscription on the monolithic Bahubali statue of Shravanabelgola, which is located on the top of Vindyagiri hill. Hence, 'Gommateshvara' denotes all images of Bahubali standing in kayotsarga posture and enwinded with creepers. In recent times the term has become more and more a synonym for Bahubali himself.
