Long ago, in Rajgriha, there lived a rich and famous person, Dhanya with four sons, Dhanpal, Dhandev, Dhandatta and Dhanrakshit. His sons were married to Ujjhita, Bhogavati, Rakshita and Rohini respectively.
After sometime, Dhanya thought, “Now I have grown old and my end can come anytime. So, before going I must make my family understand the hardships and practical aspects of life. I must make some further arrangements for the better and bright future of my family, so that they can always live a happy and smooth life without any dispute.”
Thinking this, he drew a plan in his mind to give appropriate work and responsibility to the person who was best suited for it and accordingly he proceeded. He organized a grand celebration, in which he gave five grains of rice to each of his daughter-in-law and told them, “Return it to me when I ask for it.”
The eldest daughter-in-law, Ujjhita could not understand the mystery behind it. She considered it to be useless and of no importance. Without even giving it a second thought, she threw the grain in the dustbin and told her husband, “If father-in-law will ask for it, I will give five grain of rice from the storeroom. It will hardly make any difference.”
The second daughter-in-law, Bhogavati ate all the five grain of rice, thinking that it was gesture of grace of her father-in-law and she would also give five grain of rice from the storeroom.
But the third daughter-in-law, Rakshita thought, “These were given the grand celebration by my old father-in-law. There must be some strong reason behind it and so I must take care of them.” So she preserved them in a box.
The youngster daughter-in-law, Rohini was the cleverest among them. She thought, “There must be some unknown mystery behind it, which I have to solve.” She considered that it was perfect time to use her intelligence and brainpower. She sent those to her parents and asked them to sow it in a farm so exactly the same thing happened. After harvesting and re-sowing of the rice, they grew into a large bulk.
After five year, Dhanya again organized a grand celebration and invited a large number of people. He then called his daughter-in-law and asked them to return the rice.
Ujjhita got five grain of rice from the storeroom and gave them to him. Dhanya asked her, “Are these those grains which I gave you?” She said the truth. After listening carefully, he gave her the responsibility of home cleanliness, as she would throw away unnecessary and wasteful thing, in the process of cleaning. By this, their home would always remain neat and clean.
On asking Bhogavati, she replied, “I ate them thinking it was Prasad given by you.” After hearing this, Dhanya gave her the responsibility of the kitchen, as she would make use of every tiny thing in the process of making food.
As the third daughter-in –law had preserved the grains, she got the responsibility of looking after money matters. Dhanya thought, “She will save and preserve as much money as she can. She will not spend the money unnecessarily.”
After that Rohini replied, “My rice cannot come without carts.” She explained everything to Dhanya in a very polite manner. Therefore, due to her intelligence, everyone appreciated her. She was given the responsibility of managing the whole family and the house as she had all the appropriate characteristics required for it.
Each and every person in this world has got a different nature with different abilities and characteristics of his own. Therefore, to utilize each one’s talents to the utmost, appropriate work or responsibility should be given to an appropriate person at an appropriate place and at an appropriate time. This will help to avoid disputes within a family and lead a practical, prosperous and a happy life.
