Gommaṭa (or Gomaṭa) means 'hilltop'.
Due to the position on an hilltop at Shravanabelgola the monolithic statue of Bahubali was referred in an inscription as 'Gommateshvara' (i.e. the 'lord of the hilltop'). Hence, the term is used for images of Bahubali enwinded by creeping plants while meditating in standing kayotsarga posture.
