Klaus Fischer was a German scholar spezializing in history of Indian art and archaeology. He graduated at Ruprecht-Karls-Univesität Heidelberg with a PhD in art history (baroque architecture of eastern Europe) in 1948.
After traveling to India, Iraq and Iran he spent a research period at the University of Calcutta (1953-54).
In 1959-62 he did field work in Afghanistan and Pakistan and supported some excavations in these countries during the following years.
In 1966 he was qualified as a professor (state doctorate on Indian art history) at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn where he held a chair in Oriental art history and archaeology at the Institut für Orient- und Asienwissenschaften and retired in 1985.
Among his publications there are some important works on Jaina art and architecture.
Klaus Fischer died in 1993.
