Ekatva Anupreksha (contemplation of loneliness)

A type of anupreksha is called ekatva anupreksha, meaning: a realization that each person is alone and has his or her own unique identity. There was a king named Nami. Once, king Nami got sick and could not be cured by any treatments. One day when he heard the sound of the bangles striking each other, he reflected that the sound comes when bangles were banging. When the bangles stopped striking, the sound too stopped. Two bangles were required to make the sound. From this observation, King Nami realized that it was better to live alone rather than with someone, for, when there are two, there is pain and suffering.

After all what is pain? Pain is nothing but togetherness of the two entities. Two means "conflict" and when there is conflict there are fights. When you are alone, you have no one to fight with. Here "being alone" does not mean the state of disappointment but the state of detachment.

Anuprekshas transform the mind and the emotions. Without practicing them profoundly, one cannot develop an ability to do meditation. One can attempt to do meditation by sitting down and creating the external environment, but cannot succeed without developing an internal ability through a sustained practice of anuprekshas.
