Sculpture in Indian Temples: The Art of Devotion
The first and most overwhelming impression a visitor receives upon arriving in India is how deeply and thoroughly religious activity permeates every aspect of daily life. The integration of devotion into everyday existence is almost complete. The second impression, which naturally follows almost immediately after the first, is the purity of this activity and the incredible number of deities that populate the religious landscape.
Artists on the Indian subcontinent have been creating religious imagery of these deities for the past 2,000 years under the careful tutelage of ecclesiastic leaders. This exhibition, Sculpture in Indian Temples: The Art of Devotion examines the fruits of this labour: religious imagery and figures in stone, clay, metal and wood.
The exhibition is a joint effort of the Obra Social ”la Caixa” and the Victoria & Albert Museum, in collaboration with the British Museum of London. It is the most important exhibition of its kind dedicated to figurative Indian sculpture from European collections.
