Best of Luck for exams; you are a lucky person; hard Luck dear, try next time” these are frequently spoken tags. In day-to-day life, people considered luck as the road of life. General assumption is “Luck” is the only factor that makes or breaks the life. It is already decided by god & written in zigzag lines of hand. We can find around us many persons addicted of reading the column of sun sign in newspapers & magazines as there regular & important task to make their day accordingly.

Is this phenomenon true? Is luck predecided? Is it lying in the zigzag line or in the daily column of sun signs?

I think we need to dive because there are the persons who are blessed with good luck but having no arms (hence no zigzag lines) or those who created the benchmark of success without reading and working as per the suggestion of the sun signs column.

Lets together try to understand that what is hidden behind the curtain of Luck.
Who is the maker of fortune? Why is it too hard for someone and too favorable for others though they have same birth time, date, place etc.? Why even twins have different luck?

Jainism answered all these questions through its unique Doctrine of KARMAVAD. It states that luck is nothing except our past deeds, the way of performing those deeds and the intention working behind that action.

The deeds can be classified as below -

  1. Good deeds with Good intention
  2. Good deeds with Bad intention
  3. Bad deeds with Good intention
  4. Bad deeds with Bad intention
  5. No deeds but Good intention
  6. No deeds but Bad intention

The 1st & 4th point is very clear and it respectively results in Punya & Pap Karma bondage i.e. in good & bad luck.

In 2nd situation, though we are performing good conduct but the intention with which it is done is not so good. Many times situation arises when we are forced to work/help others against our own wish. For example - Suppose for Sunday, X had planned a week ago whole day picnic & movie with friends. But on Sunday morning, his mother told him to teach their servant’s child whose board exams are about to start. X was not able to enjoy the picnic & help that child unwillingly because of her mother’s pressure. He was somewhat frustrated & remained in the thought that his picnic had been spoiled. This is the situation where X is doing the good deed of helping poor child but the intention behind it is not so worthy. In Jainism, there comes incidence where Puran Seth gets the opportunity of parna (offering food after the fast is over) of Bhagwan Mahavir but the intention behind is to get the prestige among the people rather than bhakti & devotion. This combination of good deeds and bad intention results in some good karma bondage but of weak intensity. Just for easy understanding purely based on assumption - the good work did by X with unwilling intention results in good karma bondage. Let it be equal to 10 buck.
If X performed the same work with the good intention, the resultant good karma bondage may be equal to 10,000 buck.
Conclusion is though action is same but the richness and value of good karma bondage decreases with the decrease in the degree of intention with which action has been performed.

The 3rd situation is very much similar to scolding of parents to children for studies or for improving changing the bad habits. In this situation, though there is a bad karma bondage but its intensity is very low & weak just like a cotton thread which can be broken with very little efforts.

The 5th situation is similar to Jiran Seth. He along with Puran seth wished for the opportunity of Bhagwan Mahavir’s parna but that went to Puran Seth. Then too Jiran seth touches the heights of devotion by sincerely wishing for the opportunity & done the nirjara (breaking of karma bond). It is said that if he remains to wish for 1 minute more, he may attain keval gyan (complete knowledge). This is the case where person is doing nothing but the intention & thoughts attains the heights of purity.

The 6th situation is the case where person is thinking negative & bad for others even though other doesn’t harm him nor he can cause harm to them physically. But the war continues in his mind. The best example we found of it is of Tandul Matsya. It is a very tiny organism living in the eyebrows of crocodile. When it saw that crocodile doesn’t eat every fish entering into his mouth, it thought that how mad the crocodile is who is not enjoying the opportunity. If I were at his place, I would have eaten all the fishes. In this way without doing anything, he binds karma with bad intentions.

Doctrine of KARMVAD states that luck is nothing but the intention with which we play the game of life. Bad intention results in bad luck and good intention in fortune. Its intensity varies with level of intention

This is the reason why a person with no zigzag lines creates the history of success, twins doesn’t have the common future and life is not the same playground for people having same birth, place, time or date.

So it can be said to some extent that luck is predecided by the past deeds. But it should not be understood that nothing can be done in present to overcome negative past for creating bright future.

Doctrine of KARMVAD has two very significant principles - principle of power transformation (udvartan and upvartan) & principle of nature conversion (sankraman). This signifies the importance of present over the past and future.

Principle of power transformation says that the power of karma can be changed on the basis of present action. Increased karma power will result in dense bondage and decreased in the weak bondage, may be good or bad. Also the time period of ripening karma fruits can be modified by the appropriate action. Suppose a person had some bad karma bondage, which is going to ripe in 2 months duration. That person has made changes in life style, developed the qualities of positive attitude, tolerance, kindness, generosity, become very alert towards his actions & reactions then his bad karma power get comparatively nullified with good deeds & may the fruiting term gets postponed from 2 month to any other future period.

Principle of nature conversion states that nature of karma can be changed with the appropriate action. Bad karma can be transformed into good ones or the good can happen into bad by the present actions, reactions & intentions behind that.

Jainism truly believes that action is the manager of luck & the present is more powerful then the past and future. Combination of present time and right action generates the fortune of a living being.

It has been very rightly narrated by one of the saints in this regard:

“ Janam nahi nij haath, Maran nahi nij haath,
Jivan apne haath hai, likh de oojwal khyat”

(Birth is not in our hand, nor the end,
Let’s glorify the life, which is in our hand)

So from today, don’t take the support of excuses that luck is unfavorable or sun signs are negative. Just stand up with the burning fire to make the luck. Don’t wait for the time assuming that it will bring the bed of roses effortlessly.

“Luck follows the Deed. So choose the right direction and proceed”
