Kāyotsarga Posture

Sculptures of a standing Tirthankara depict the Jina meditating in kāyotsarga posture where the arms hanging stiff with the body. According to the Jaina tradition, most Tirthankar.a.s (except Rishabha, Neminatha and Mahavira) passed away while meditating in kāyotsarga posture.

 

The earliest bronze sculptures of a Tirthankara shows the Jina standing in kāyotsarga posture while the earliest stone images, found on Āyāgapaṭṭas from c. 2nd century CE, depicts the Jina sitting in padmāsana posture with the gesture of dhyāna mudrā.
