Upakesha Gaccha

The history of this gaccha is closely connected to the Oswals. Many of the lay followers of the Upakesha Gaccha were converted from the Oswal caste, who had been Vaishnavite. Paul Dundas in the Encyclopaedia of Jainism (ed. Narendra Singh, Vol. 1) writes:

"The chronicle of the Upakesha Gaccha describes how a monk called Ratnaprabha Suri who died eighty-four years after Mahavira was responsible for the conversion of the Oswals. In fact, despite attemps based on highly questionable interpretations of fragmentary inscriptions to locate Jainism in Rajasthan before the common era, there seems no doubt that Ratnaprabh.a Sur.i lived considerably later, possibly in the twelth century."

The lineage of the Upakesha Gaccha died out at the end of the 19th century or the beginning of 20th century.
