Mr. Debabshish Nayak a leading architect and heritage advisor of India delivered a presentation on ‘Ahmedabad as a heritage City’ in Sangosthi Lecture Series of L.D. Institute of Indology on 19th July 2011. Mr. Nayak presented several characteristics of Ahmedabad with special reference to the old city and its architecture. He was enamoured of the construction of the Poles which were north to south through out the city. He described wooden carvings of the several houses still preserved in poles at their own locations. He made reference to Sheth Mangaldas and other Havelis which has excellent wooden carvings as well as excellent architecture with extra-ordinary facilities for air-water etc. Mostly the houses have its own natural water storage facilities within the basement of houses. This shows the nature of Ahmedabadi people to survive during the scarcity of rains. Shri Debashish referred to Rani Rupamati Maszid, Shah-e-Alam (Sarkhej) Roaza and world famous stone carvings of Sidi Syed Jali. He also refered to certain Jain temples in old city which are preserved in very wonderful condition which hardly happens in any other city. He informed that Ahmedabad is included in Unesco's List to be declared as Heritage City of the World.
On this occasion Padma Vibhushan Prof. M. A. Dhaki chaired the event.
Dr. J. B. Shah, Director of the Institute welcomed the guests while Prof. Kanubhai Shah accorded the vote of thanks. Prof. Prashant Dave anchored the program.
