Toronto Veggie Pride Parade - Rise of the Vegetarian in Toronto!
Toronto, June 2nd 2012 - Toronto is host to one of the world’s largest Veggie Pride Parades and we are marching straight into the heart of Downtown Toronto this coming Saturday! Parade organizers are putting a call out to veg or “veg-curious” folks to join in the parade whether it be in costume, on skateboard, or with stroller. The third annual parade will prove to be bigger and better - with inspiring speakers, mouth-watering vegan food, and a grand finale “Dance With The Animals” featuring larger than life-sized animal mascots. So find that inner party animal and come dance with us!
Never before has it been so convenient to “go veg”. Now more than ever it is easy to find a delicious vegetarian food section at your local supermarket, stroll through any Toronto neighbourhood and you’ll find a gem of a veg restaurant. Hey, even your corner store stocks soy beverages and coconut milk-based ice-cream!
"Toronto has one of the most thriving vegetarian communities in the world. We're inviting everyone to come join us for a vibrant and fun parade, delicious food, and to celebrate the veg lifestyle that benefits the animals, the environment, and our own health as well!" says Toronto Veggie Pride Parade spokesperson and television host, Kimberly Carroll. The parade will feature everything from burlesque dancers to vegan athletes, lettuce-bikinied beauties to broccoli boys to roller derby girls, veterinarians to salsa dancers, acrobats to Bollywood dancers.
It seems there has never been a more compelling time to cut out animal products from one’s diet:
- Conditions for the almost 665 million animals going through the Canadian factory farming system yearly are horrifying with intensive confinement, extreme genetic manipulation, and brutal transport and slaughter practices.
- Environmentally, the United Nations says the raising of animals for food is contributing more to global greenhouse gases than all the world's cars, transport trucks, and airplanes combined. It is also a major source of land and water degradation.
- Health-wise, a veg diet is huge in preventing some of the major diseases striking Canadians. For example, vegans have a 57% reduced risk of heart disease and vegetarians have a 40% reduced chance of getting cancer than the general population.
The Toronto Veggie Pride Parade begins noon on June 2nd at Bloor and Yonge and will head south along Yonge Street to Queen Street, west along Queen to James Street, north on James to Trinity Square!
