2013, 2014 and Beyond

From 2012, when the 40th IVU World Vegfest was held in North America (specifically in San Francisco and Los Angeles - see the next article for details), the IVU World Vegfest will now be held annually, reflecting the global spread of vegetarianism.

Here is the roster of host regions through 2017.

Report from the 2012 IVU World Vegfest

The PDF below (250k) is four pages (2-5) from 'American Vegan' - the journal of the American Vegan Society (AVS) - reporting on the 2012 IVU Vegfest in San Francisco (chaired by Dixie Mahy, pictured here) and Los Angeles (chaired by Jeff Nelson), California last October.

Page 4 has details of AVS, and the contents of all 36 pages, which you can get by joining, and page 5 is a global roundup from the Vegfest: www.worldvegfest.org/.../amvegan2.pdf

New IVU Representative for Europe

IVU now has eight regional representatives. For the names and contact information of these splendid folks, visit ivu.org/.../contacts.html

In Europe, Francesco Maurelli, President of the European Vegetarian Union (see photo), has succeeded the very able Shabari Monica Saha as the IVU Rep. (Shabari is now Honorary General Secretary of EVU)

Here is some background on Francesco.

1. Please tell us a little about yourself.
I am 28, an Italian living in Edinburgh, Scotland. I have been vegetarian since I was 10.

2. What is your occupation?
I am a researcher in underwater robotics at Heriot-Watt University, and I've published several articles about autonomous systems, autonomous navigation and decision making, and autonomous multi-agent cooperation. Currently, I am managing a big EU project on persistent autonomy and fault recovery and a multi-robot cooperation project.

In April 2011 I've founded a company - Kosmo Strategio Ltd. - which deals with project management, EU funding, training courses and education, working with several NGOs, universities and individuals around the globe.

3. What about your past involvement with the veg movement?
I have been active in the European Vegetarian Union (EVU) - www.euroveg.eu - for a few years, coming from TEVA - Tutmonda Esperantista Vegetarana Asocio (World Esperantist Vegetarian Association - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Esperantist_Vegetarian_Association), of which I am vice-president. After being EVU vice-president for a couple of years, I was elected as President in July, 2012.

4. What are your hopes for EVU?
I wish to build a strong umbrella European organisation, which can provide tools and support for local and national activities, and at the same time be the European reference organisation for topics linked to vegetarian food, diet and lifestyle. Several CEOs of national societies joined the board, so I am quite optimistic that there is a common will to go forward in a constructive way.

5. Please tell us more about your involvement in the Esperanto movement.
I am also quite active in the Esperanto community. I have board experience at local (Rome) and national levels (Italy, Scotland), and I am in the committee (like a parliament) of the World Esperanto Association (UEA) and the World Esperanto Youth Organisation (TEJO), participating in many activities of the European Youth Forum.

When possible, I like to join these two worlds - which have been connected since the very beginning of IVU. For example UEA and TEJO organised a side event linked to RIO+20, and I managed to get TEVA and EVU as co-organisers, introducing the vegetarian diet as a key element of sustainable development.

1st International Veggie Pride

Veggie Pride will take place on Saturday, 18 May, 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. It will open the World Week for the Abolition of Meat (WWAM), 18-25 May. Veggie Pride will be an international event for the first time and activists from many different countries are expected.

In addition to Veggie Pride, various other actions and events will be held from May 16th to the 20th; conferences, an event in front of the UN, another at the World Health Organization, an initiative asking society to recognize legal rights for animals (right to life, to liberty, and to be no one’s property), etc.
All events will be authorized. Given the high cost of living in Switzerland, we will offer vegan food and housing at the lowest price possible.

If you wish to help the team organizing the Veggie Pride 2013, please take this survey and let us know the days you are planning on coming to:  soorvey.com/fr/?s=498GNQYLIRN

This Month’s HCYKTASEM

This month’s How Can You Know This And Still Eat Meat (HCYKTASEM) piece comes from Nutrition Facts - nutritionfacts.org - the website on which Dr Michael Greger posts many 1-2 minute research based videos per week, with accompanying information on the research and links to related videos.

For centuries, men have sought cures for erectile dysfunction, an identity threatening, pride overwhelming malady. Many men would probably rather suffer any medical problem other than erectile dysfunction. Dr Greger’s videos offer evidence that a plant based diet may be the most effective and safest way to avoid erectile dysfunction.

Dr Greger wrote: As noted in a recent article in the Harvard Health Letter, up to three quarters of men with cholesterol narrowed coronary arteries have some degree of erectile dysfunction. There's drugs like Viagra, but they're temporary—and expensive—solution that can cause hazardous side effects. Obviously if your arterial system is that damaged a more intensive effort that involves much more than popping a pill can yield longer term improvements in both sexual function and cardiovascular health.

Here are some of his videos on the topic.

More on Men’s Health

Following up on the information in this month’s HCYKTASEM about erectile dysfunction is an article in the magazine ‘Men’s Health’ which features a video on the topic from PETA.

The article is entitled ‘The Sex Secrets Vegans Know’. news.menshealth.com/the-sex-secret-vegans-know/2012/11/13/

TED Talks on Veg Topics

TED Talks are an ever expanding variety of fairly short (usually less than 20 minute) YouTube available videos on a wealth of topics. Recently, many vegetarian advocates have done such videos, including Dr Neil Barnard (pictured here) speaking on preventing and reversing diabetes at www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktQzM2IA-qU

TED videos have good sound and picture quality and usually come with transcripts. Other veg advocates who have done TED videos include Kathy Freston, Douglas Lisle, Julieanna Hever, Colin Campbell, Rip Esselstyn, John McDougall, Joshua Knox, and Brendan Brazier.

Worth Watching: ‘Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead’

This film, available on dvd and online - www.fatsickandnearlydead.com - tells the story of an Australian’s journey to health and the people whom he helped along the way. Commentary by Dr Joel Fuhrman - www.drfuhrman.com - supplies the scientific evidence for a vegan diet. Here is part of the blurb from the film’s website:

"100 pounds overweight, loaded up on steroids and suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease, Joe Cross (on the left in the photo with Dr Fuhrman) is at the end of his rope and the end of his hope. In the mirror he saw a 310lb man whose gut was bigger than a beach ball and a path laid out before him that wouldn't end well - with one foot already in the grave, the other wasn't far behind. FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD is an inspiring film that chronicles Joe's personal mission to regain his health.

"With doctors and conventional medicines unable to help long- term, Joe turns to the only option left, the body's ability to heal itself. He trades in the junk food and hits the road with juicer and generator in tow, vowing only to drink fresh fruit and vegetable juice for the next 60 days. Across 3,000 miles Joe has one goal in mind: To get off his pills and achieve a balanced lifestyle.

"While talking to more than 500 Americans about food, health and longevity, it's at a truck stop in Arizona where Joe meets a truck driver who suffers from the same rare condition. Phil Staples is morbidly obese weighing in at 429 lbs; a cheeseburger away from a heart-attack. As Joe is recovering his health, Phil begins his own epic journey to get well.

"What emerges is nothing short of amazing - an inspiring tale of healing and human connection. Part road trip, part self-help manifesto, FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD defies the traditional documentary format to present an unconventional and uplifting story of two men from different worlds who each realize that the only person who can save them is themselves."
