Jain Samaj Manchester

Honourable Lord mayor of Manchester Councillor Naeem Ul Hassan presented cheques worth £15,000 from funds raised by the members of Jain Samaj Manchester to the representatives of nominated charities.

The Jain samaj is a registered charity based in Stockport and has played an important role to promote culture and values in the United Kingdom. 2013 was the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Jain Samaj Manchester (JSM) temple and community centre. As part of numerous celebratory events throughout the year, members were encouraged to raise money for JSM’s two nominated charities: St Ann’s Hospice (a local Manchester-based hospice caring for patients with life-limiting illnesses) and the National Kidney Foundation (a national organisation supporting kidney patients).

Over the past year JSM members have been involved in a number of exciting and innovative fundraising events, ranging from lighting candles as a remembrance for past members, to physical activities like the 10km Midnight walk and 10km run. Each of these events, however big or small, have all been crucial in helping JSM to raise much needed funds for the largest hospice in Greater Manchester and for National Kidney Federation.

Dushyant Mehta, the Charity Leader for JSM said "We are proud of the fund raising efforts of our members and are pleased to support two incredible charities that truly improve the lives of hundreds of patients."

Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Naeem ul Hassan said: “It was an honour to present these cheques on behalf of Jain Samaj Manchester.

I’d like to commend all members of Jain Samaj Manchester for their hard work in raising this money and I am certain their contribution will help the lives of people in Manchester and across the country”

Alison Gilbody, Director of Income Generation & Communications of St Anns Hospice said, “we’re enormously grateful for all the hard work of Jain Samaj Manchester in fundraising for us. It’s a fantastic amount and equates roughly to just over a day’s running costs of our Heald Green hospice”.

Kirit Modi, Chairman of the NKF said: I am most grateful for the fantastic support from the Jain Samaj in Manchester to the NKF throughout this year. Your generous donation will enable the NKF to continue to provide direct support to thousands of kidney patients in the UK and we would be honoured to continue to work in partnership with you to help save lives by increasing the number of kidney transplants within the Jain community.

The principle of charitable giving and supporting the local community is firmly embedded within the Jain religion. Jainism, originating in the Indus Valley approximately 3,000-5,000 BC, is one of the world’s oldest religions. Jainism's key precepts include non-violence, non-attachment to possessions and the acceptance of all points of view.

The money raised by the JSM will help to improve people’s lives. St Ann’s Hospice needs to raise £16,000 every day through voluntary contributions to offer its wide range of services. In total it costs £8.75 million each year to run the Hospice, of which only 35% is received from government funding. Therefore it is the continued support from the local community that enables St Ann’s Hospice to continue providing the highest standards of care to patients, families and careers.

The National Kidney Federation (NKF) is unique amongst kidney charities, being the only national charity run ‘by kidney patients, for kidney patients’. NKF is the patient's voice and is fighting to achieve high-quality renal treatment across the UK. It is able to monitor and compare renal services across the country because of its unique patient-run structure. It is run by representatives of the 55 separate Kidney Patient Associations geographically spread across the UK. This gives it enormous knowledge of the 'scene out there' and enables swift action to be taken when any problems are identified.

The Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees of JSM want to express their sincerest gratitude to St. Ann’s Hospice and the National Kidney Federation for giving JSM the opportunity to provide support, and to JSM members for their willingness and generosity in fundraising.
