3-Week Teaching for Peace Program
TEACHING FOR PEACE: AN INDIAN IMMERSION EXPERIENCE IN PRACTICAL NONVIOLENCE
International Summer School for Jain Studies (ISSJS), India
JULY 15 - AUGUST 5, 2014
The brutality of much of the world’s past and present highlights the critical need for alternate means of resolving conflicts. Nonviolence (ahimsa in Sanskrit) is a powerful tool for responding to conflict and creating change. Not to be confused with pacifism, it is constructive, fearless, empowering, and above all, inspiring work. Transforming the world begins with transforming individuals, and this program will turn India into a classroom where participants are immersed in a lifestyle of ahimsa.
The International Summer School for Jain Studies (ISSJS) invites you to study ahimsa (non-violence) in India this summer. Participants will travel through New Delhi, Jalgaon, and Pune, for three weeks, studying the landscape of ahimsa practice in food, medicine, health, conflict resolution, race relations, use of labor, economics, and entertainment. Participants will interact with living examples of the practice of ahimsa by meeting teachers, business people, officers of the law, politicians, medical practitioners, engineers, and community leaders; visit schools and hostels where children live and practice nonviolence; visit Gandhi’s cremation grounds, museums, and other places of historical interest; and practice ahimsa meditation, and other contemplative spiritual methods throughout the three weeks.
