Religion has its own area wherein there is no concept of friend or foe.
Amity is acceptable but not with only one person.
Spiritual amity is with all mankind.
On the basis of this principle, a sukta has been framed:

Milli mei savvabhulesu:
I have amity with all living beings.

From the spiritual perspective it can not be said that so and so is my friend for it will imply somebody else is not.
There is thus no question of favouring any particular individual in a spiritual friendship.
