Two States of Meditation:

During meditation, two states are possible, one in which thinking continues at one focal point and the other in which there is no thinking.

It is mentioned in the following verse:

abhaavo va nirodhah syaat, sa cha
chintaantaravyayah
ek chintaatmako yad va, svasamvit chintayojjhita

It means that presence or absence of thoughts are the two states. In the first state, the focus is on one point whereas in another there are no thoughts.

When we knowingly concentrate on one thought, support or subject and the mind stays engaged in that field only without getting strayed then we can say that meditation has started. Though, to stay focused on just one thought is very difficult because there is a lot happening inside our inner world at any given time which we neither feel nor know about.

For instance, Karmas are continuously bearing fruits which are changing our emotions and the chitta (psyche) as well. As a result of fruition of Karmas there is a change in the hormones in our body which influences our thoughts and lead to fickleness of the mind. In such a state, concentration on one thought is beyond our imagination.
