Pranayam:An important member of meditation family is pranayam. Pranayam means regulating the breathing. Breathing in and out is a natural activity. Once a breath is inhaled, it is exhaled as well. Pranayam does not mean to expand the breathing, although it is easy to confuse it with that because expansion is also one of the meanings of the word ayam.
In the present context the word pranayam means to regulate the breathing. Holding the breath is also an important aspect of meditation. People who suffer from an acute state of the fickleness of mind may find that the practice of pranayam is quite useful. It is very important to know the technique of holding the breath, as not knowing it perfectly, can cause considerable harm.
For example, one should know, not to hold breathing for very long. One should hold the breath for five or ten seconds at the most. Holding should be for the duration that does not cause any discomfort. Breathing should not be held forcefully. Those who want to indulge in stopping breathing exercises should first examine their body. For example, people who suffer from heart disease or high blood pressure should not do this exercise. For them such exercises can be dangerous. For people who do not suffer from such diseases, the practice of holding the breath for five seconds and increasing it gradually to twenty seconds, can assist in the practice of meditation and to gain control over the fickleness of the mind.
