2014.10.3-4 ►CLU ►3rd International Jain Conference on Business Ethics (2)

Claremont Lincoln University

This year’s theme focuses on one of the most salient issues of our time, applied ethics in the realm of business. The Jain community has a keen interest in this area of study owing to the fact that the ancient tradition has championed ethical business practices for over 3000 years.

Historically Jains avoided trades and business practices that inflicted violence on other forms of life and compromised their supreme vow of Ahimsa (non-violence). This led them to pursue work with stones, as stones are seen to as not having souls, as well as pursing banking and finance. In time this led the Jain community to be prolific diamond merchants, precious stone traders, financiers and investment bankers. While Jains represent less than one percent of India’ s population they control as much as twenty percent of the gross national product of the country. Here in the United States you will find practicing Jains among the ranks of the most successful captains of industry in corporations such Cisco Systems, Berkshire Hathaway and Combine International.

Please join us for this two-day conference exploring business ethics in the Jain tradition.
