Dr. Bernie Meyer


Mahatma Gandhi is regarded as one of the great men of the 20th Century for introducing non-violence to oust the British Empire from India. "Now, more than ever, is Gandhi's message needed," says Dr. Bernie Meyer. He introduces the historic Gandhi with a real life portrayal, humanizing the life and teachings of one of India's most beloved figures. An activist for 43 years, he took his message one step further and began emulating Gandhi in his dress, words and actions. He presents cutting-edge theories about human motivation and non-violence utilizing Gandhi's experiences and principles. He applies these theories to core violence especially global climate change, nuclear weapons and resource depletion. In 2007, he received an Individual Lifetime Achievement award in Human Rights from the Thurston Council on Cultural Diversity and Human Rights. He has been portraying Gandhi for 9 years and has made 10 journeys to India portraying Gandhi. He is now known in India as "the American Gandhi."

Bircan Unver

 

Executive Director, Founding President and Permanent Representative to the UN DPI/ NGO of The Light Millennium, a native of Turkey, Bircan Unver is the Originator (1999) and the Founding President of The Light Millennium (LM 2001), a public benefit, multi-media and culture organization. She has been Executive Producer and Director of the LM's e-publications in its all aspects since its inception. As an advocate for 'freedom of expression" and 'public benefit media" she has compiled and e-published over 57 e-issues and produced over 100 original television programs, garnering several awards. Developed, organized/co-organized, presented/co-presented, over 60 public events. She has lectured on freedom of expression, public access television, women & girl rights, UN, MDGS and presentations on the LM and LMTV. Further, she is the Founding President ISIKBINYILI.ORG Multi-Media, Culture and Social Development and Support association based in Istanbul, Turkey, which officially formed in January 2010. Bircan holds a master's degree in Media Studies from the New School University (1999, NYC), and B.A. in Fine Arts from the MimarSinan University (1988, Istanbul).

Anyone trying to search anything about Jainism is bound to reach herenow4u one way or the other. It all started with a couple from Germany making a voyage to India, specifically to Rajasthan and their world changed, so were their names. Carla became Karuna which means compassion whereas Christian became Aparigraha which means being free of greed and possessiveness. Renamed by his holiness Acharya Shri Mahapragya himself, this couple has played a major role in making the teaching of Jainism reach to a very large audience around the world. With a huge web of information network around the world, each and every development in the remotest part of the world is captured by them at the earliest. Together, they also run the Preksha Meditation center at Berlin known as Preksha International and are most sought after editors in the Jain fraternity.

Samani Charitra Prajna

is fortunate enough to have received spiritual blessings and energy from His Holiness Acharya Tulsi and His Holiness Acharya Mahapragya, the modern day Peace Makers. Based in India, she received her Masters from Jain Vishva Bharti University. She believes change starts from education. At present she is teaching courses like Non-violence and Jainism, Meditation and spiritual development at the Florida International University. She has devoted her life for Spirituality. Spirituality according to her is a path of self-awakening and the well-being of the world. She is not a mere orator but a good meditation guide too. Her melodious soft voice helps people easily enter into the state of trance. She has held many Preksha meditaion camps in US and other countries and steered thousands of people towards healthy and peaceful living.

Mr. Chetan Sanghvi

is actively involved in various community and inter-faith activities. He was the Editor-in-Chief for the Jain Digest - a North American Jain magazine published by JAIN A. His interests involve scientific validation and investigation of various topics related to Jainism and spiritualism in general. Born in Jain tradition, he struggled to reconcile Jain traditional beliefs that lacked scientific scrutiny. He credits his Guru Acharaya Mahapragya for clarifying the subtle differences and relationship between truth as understood by tradition and finding the truth by experience. Professionally, Mr. Sanghvi has over 30 years of experience in start-up management, R&D team incubation for start-ups, semi-conductor development & production and systems development. He is currently the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of CoreEL Technologies Pvt. Ltd., India.

Prof. Chris De Lauwer

Antwerp is known as world's Diamond city and home for a lot of Indian origin immigrants. It will be a rarity to find an Indian from Antwerp who has never heard of Professor Chris De Lauwer. An avid traveller and a proud mother of two, she was born and raised in India where her father worked as an engineer for over 10 years. After studying and teaching Indology at the Department of Languages and Cultures of South Asia at the Ghent University, she led the Public Relations of the Ethnographic Museum of Antwerp for 10 years. As an Indologist, she specializes in Jainism, which is the most prominent religion among Indian diamond merchants at Antwerp. She also teaches Jainism at the Faculty for Comparative Religious Studies in Wilrijk and Indian religions at the Centre Pieter Gillis.

Prof. Christine Chojnacki

The prestigious "Prakrit Jnanabharati International Award" was presented by The National Institute of Prakrit Studies and Research, Shravanabelagola to only 2 selected scholars in 2013. One of them is Prof. Christine Chojnacki. Her contribution to prakrit study is unprecedented. Prof. Dr. Christoph Stuckelberger

is founder, was president and is now Executive Director of the global network on ethics - Globethics.net, based in Geneva, Switzerland. He was president of ECLOF International, the Ecumenical organisation for micro-credit working in 30 developing countries. He is part-time Professor of Ethics at the Theological Faculty of the University of Basel in Switzerland. He got his PhD with a doctoral thesis on Peace Ethics (the reconciling role of Churches in conflict situations) and his habilitation on Environmental Ethics. His main fields of research are economic ethics, political ethics and development ethics. He was founder and president of Transparency International Switzerland (the Swiss chapter of the coalition against corruption). He was member of the Commission for International Cooperation of the Swiss Government and was president of its sub-commission on WTO. He was member of the Swiss Ethics Committee on Non-human Biotechnology of the Swiss Government. He was director of the Development Organisation "Bread for AH".

Ms. Claudia Pastorino

It is said that music is the language of the soul and universal language of mankind. Probably this language was the inspiration which brought our next guest close to the heart of Jainism and particularly its doctrine of non-violence. Hailing from Genoa, Italy, Claudia Pastorino is a pop singer, writer and teacher of Voice & Voice-Therapy. For the last 20 years, Claudia has dedicated herself to the learning and practice of the Jainism Doctrine. For the past 30 years, Claudia volunteers as an activist for Animals Rights and has been spreading the message of Vegetarianism. She has translated in Italian language and published in Italy some Jain books like Saman Suttam, The Jainism and The essence of Jainism. She has published 7 CDs till date along with her impressive works on Voice-Therapy simultaneously.

Prof. Dipak C. Jain

Having studied in a Hindi-medium school in Tezpur, Assam, the first time he wrote in English was way after his school days and the spelling mistake in English at that time has made his name being spelt as Dipak (with "I" not with "ee") even today. Served as the Dean of two of the world's top business schools, the INSEAD and Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, a board of Director at Reliance Industries Limited, Dr. Dipak C. Jain is the most sought after Marketing Guru around the globe. His areas of research include the marketing of high-tech products, market segmentation and competitive market structure analysis, cross-cultural issues in global product diffusion, new product diffusion and forecasting models. Prof. Eugen Ciurtin

is responsible for the Center of History of Religions at the University of Bucharest. He also Initiated and co-organized the European Congress of History of religions on "Religious History of Europe and Asia", held in Bucharest in the year 2006. He is also member of several international professional associations. A Master of Philosophy of Culture and a PhD in modern history at the Institute of History, he is one of the most significant Indology professors of Romanian origin. He has published over 200 research articles and reviews in international periodicals studies of the history of religions and Indology. He is also a coordinator of European postdoctoral fellowships program " Religion, history and society in Europe and Asia" in the Institute of History of Religions of the Romanian Academy.

Mr. Gordon Anderson

A few years ago, Mr. Gordon Anderson attended a Diksha ceremony in Bikaner, India, which offered him a unique opportunity to understand the functionality of Jain Terapanth system. Alongside, he had an opportunity to listen toAcharya Shri Mahapragya and the then Yuvacharya Shri Mahashraman. First introduced to Jainism and Preksha meditation by Samani Sanmati Pragya in 2004, Mr. Gordon is a retired United States Postal serviceman from Houston Texas. He has been involved in Social activism projects like Harris County Green Party & Cuba Coalition of Houston and travelled across India on a Gandhi Study Tour.

Professor Dr. Jinwol Young Ho Lee

 a Korean Buddhist monk and the Seon Master, is a professor of Buddhist Studies at Dongguk University. He is a monk who has given the society more than what is expected of him after practicing meditation on a mountain for about 6 years. He has worked as a member of Presidential Committee on Sustainable Development in Korean government. Moreover, he has been a monk for more than 50 years now. He established United Religions Initiative of Korea and has worked as a Global Council member of United Religions Initiative.

is a Bolivian professional serving as Ambassador in India since October, 2012. He was Professor of Marketing in Inbound Tourism & Guiding at the Catholic University, San Pablo in La Paz, Bolivia. He is also an International Consultant in Sustainable Development and Tourism in Bolivia as well as in other countries like Peru and Honduras. He helps to add to productive value and develop sustainable tourism in different fields like community, ecotourism, adventure as well as management and promotion. He is a founder member of the National Committee of Ecotourism of Bolivia set up in 2002.

Prof. Josef Bartosek

There are hardly any Jains living in Czech Republic and consequently there are no Jain organizations or Jain temples either. But in spite of this, it is heartening to see that Jainism is being taught in the most prestigious Charles University in Prague. Prof. Josef Bartosek is a Czech professor, who has been regularly offering a course on Jainism at Charles University in Prague. He uses a more practical approach in his teaching such as demonstrating a Jain 'Snatra Pooja' performance live in the class for the students. His research focus is on Jainism's importance for religionist study along with its function in a multicultural society. He lives a very simple life like a true Jain saint in Prague. His family does not keep a car or aTV set in their home and is frugal when it comes to material things.

Prof. Dr. Kim Skoog

A scholar who believes that teaching should be on the field by conducting travel study courses. He takes his students to Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Mongolia, Nepal, China and Tibet for his field teaching. An invited lecturer, presenter of over 75 papers in Europe, United States and Asia at institutions like MIT, Harvard etc., he has published over 25 articles in journals and books throughout the world. For the past 20 years, Dr. Kim Skoog has turned his attention to Jain philosophy and religion. He has introduced a course on Jain philosophy at his university and added sections on Jainism in several of his other courses. He regularly volunteers to teach college classes for the University of Maryland on U.S. military bases around the world and includes sections on Jainism in his course on Asian philosophy and religion. He has been teaching Jainism and Ahimsa to US soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan for about 8years.

Prof. Kusum Jain

A professor of Philosophy from University of Rajasthan, Jaipur Prof. Kusum Jain has held several significant administrative positions at the University of Rajasthan. Her M.Phil, dissertation was on the Jain Concept of Syadavada (Theory of Multiple Perspectives) and she obtained her Ph.D. from University of Ottawa, Canada in 1985 on Foundational Aspects of Human Rights. She has been a visiting scholar at Carlton University, Canada. Some of her important publications deal with subjects such as Human Rights, Alternative Models of Development, Bio-Ethical issues, Roots of Terrorism and Relationship between Economic Structures and Culture Values. Besides philosophy, her commitment to Jainism makes her one of the renowned Jain scholars of India. She has written extensively on Jain Logic, especially on Anekantvada & Syadvada. Prof. Jain has been teaching Jainism to groups of professors, research scholars and graduate students visiting from various American, European and Asian Universities. She is also a member of the academic council of International School for Jain Studies (I.S.J.S)

Prof. Luis Carlos Rodriguez Leiva

Prof. Luis Carlos Rodriguez Leiva comes from a very diverse background. He hails from Spain, born in Morocco and traveled to England and France for his studies. In Spain, he worked for many years as a secondary school teacher, trying to communicate ethical values and form the character of the students. After a tragic accident in his close family, he decided to stop teaching and seek the truth of life instead. The turning point came while travelling to India, where he got deeply interested in Indian philosophy, yoga and meditation and during its course he met Swami Dharmananda who guided him to visit JainVishva Bharati Ladnun, Rajasthan where he was inspired by Acharya Mahaprajnaand Terapanth Sangh. Later he joined the Ahimsa Yatra from Ladnun to Jaipur and since then he has been closely associated with Terapanth.

Prof. Muni Mahendra Kumar

A senior Jain Terapanth monk and disciple of Acharya Shri Tulsi, his successors Acharya Shri Mahaprajna, and Acharya Shri Mahashraman. At 20, after passing in first class in B.Sc.(Hons.) from University of Bombay, he was initiated in monkhood. He is a professor at Jain Vishva Bharati University, Ladnun, Rajasthan, India in the department of 'Science of Living' and 'Preksha Meditation'. He is a versatile scholar having mastery over diverse disciplines such as Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Philosophy, Psychology, Ancient History, Meditation, Spirituality and several languages like Sanskrit, Prakrit, English, Hindi, Gujarati and Rajasthani. He is a practitioner and instructor of Preksha Meditation. He has edited several books on Preksha Meditation and given audio-visual lectures on Preksha Meditation during International Preksha Meditation Camps. Acharya Shri Tulsi awarded him with the honour" Principal of Preksha".

Mr. Manuel Burnand

Mr. Manuel Burnand is the Director of Environment & Development at Derichebourg Environnement, Paris and also the Chairman of the French Recycling Association Shredder Commission (FEDEREC). With over 25 years of experience in the recycling industry, he is one of the most sought after experts in the field. A professor of philosophy and humanities and chairs the Asian studies Program at Hawai Pacific University. He is also developing a course on Yoga philosophy. He has been awarded a Pre-Doctoral Fellowship to bring Buddhist Philosophy to one of the country's largest land-grant universities. A specialist in South Asian and East-West comparative philosophy as well as philosophy of religion, Prof. Matthew LoPresti has been researching in developing a metaphysical basis for a genuine religious pluralism. In India, he taught Buddhist philosophy to American students and was the field research advisor for the Antioch Buddhist studies program in Bodh Gaya. Outside of academia, he serves as an elected official in Ewa Beach and invests in community as an entrepreneur.

Dr. Muhammed Muzzammil Cader

" I like a tree where all kinds of birds can nest." "There is enough love in the world to share than spread the little hatred that is rare." These words come from Dr. Muhammed Muzzammil Cader, who is a Facilitator, a Trainer, a Consultant on Non Violent Conflict Resolution, a Peace Builder and a Human Rights Activist. He hails from Sri Lanka and is currently leading an organization called Samadana-M, which works to form non-violent societies all over the country. Having devoted his life completely to the cause of Non-Violence, he has been awarded the title of "Desha keerthi" in Sri Lanka which means 'Bringing honour to the nation". He studied Law in Sri Lanka and holds a diploma for studies in Human Relation and International Development from the Canada World University. He is the Head of the Human Rights Department at the South Asian Academy for Good Governance and is the Secretary General of the People's Assembly of Sri Lanka. Apart from his social activism, he is also a Writer, a Poet and a Creative Thinker.

Prof. Natalia Zheleznova

Prakrit is one of the oldest Indo-Aryan languages and known to be one of the most difficult to understand. Only a few scholars knowing this language are alive today. In 2005, she published a book known as "Doctrine of Kundakunda in Philosophical and Religious Tradition of Jainism" with translation from Prakrit into Russian. The Author received the "Kunda Kunda Bharti" award from Ms. Sonia Gandhi for her work. Representing the Russian Federation from the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Natalia Zheleznova has worked on more than 30 papers on different aspects of Jainism, Buddhism and Indian culture, helping the teachings reach an even wider audience in Eastern Europe.

Prof. Peter Flügel

A scholar from UK, who received Acarya Tulsi Anekant Samman Award in 1999, followed by the International Pravartini Parvati Jain Award in 2010 was named as the Jewel of the Jain World in 2012 by the Jain World Foundation USA. Studies in Jainism would have been a lot poorer without its crowning jewel - Dr. Peter Flugel. He is the Chair of the Centre for Jaina Studies, London. He is a member of the Centre for South Asian Studies and the SOAS Food Studies Centre. Apart from Jaina studies, he has broad interests in religion and society, social anthropology, sociology, philosophy and Indology. He has published extensively on anthropology & sociology of Jain schools and socio-political and legal history of Jain tradition along with relic stupas & sects. He is also working on questions of comparative philosophy, pluralism and non-violence.

Dr. Pradeep Dhakal

These words come from a person who has dedicated his life towards International Peace. Dr. Pradeep Dhakal is a Doctorate in Religion and Peace. He believes that the development of the core of an individual is the way to peace. He is also the founder of Chetanalaya Institute for Humanity, Peace & Spirituality at Kathmandu, Nepal. Chetanalaya is the home for developing and applying the strength of conscience to make a difference and bring about renaissance.

Dr. Richard Fynes

A principal lecturer of Art, Design and Humanities from the School of Design, De Montfort University, Leicester, Dr. Richard Fynes has worked across different fields whether it is about trade coinage and economy or researching on the sacred texts of the east. He was a committee member of Anglo-Ethiopian Society 2011 and Yorkshire Numismatic Society 2012. He is a proud member of several professional associations and societies and a regular at various international conferences.

Prof. Richard J. Cohen

Prof. Richard J. Cohen became interested in the languages, literatures and cultures of South Asia while studying at the Maharaja Sayajirao University in India. He also lived in a village in Rajasthan for about two years as a Peace Corps volunteer. Later, he specialized in the classical & medieval languages, Sanskrit, Prakrit and Apabhramsa in graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his research and teaching activities, he administered South Asian centers at several universities. He also directed a research library for a couple of years in Hyderabad, India as a Fulbright scholar. His intellectual interests lie primarily in the medieval era's transitional languages and literatures of north India such as Apabhramsa, early Hindavi and Awadhi. He developed an interest and specialization in Jainism through his work in Prakrit and Apabhramsa. He was also intrigued by early South Asian Sufism through a study of its literature.

Dr. Rudi Jansma

Dr. Rudi Jansma, born in Rotterdam has studied neo-tropical vegetation science and nature preservation in The Netherlands and South America. Later he went on to specialize in intercultural philosophy relating to the attitude towards nature and views on ecology and evolution with several non-western cultures. He worked for various environmental groups concerned with tropical ecosystems. He traveled extensively and was in close contact with many cultures. At present he lives in Rajasthan, India. He hopes and expects that the knowledge and ethics of the different cultures will significantly contribute to the global culture of the coming ages. Though a westerner, his lifestyle is like a Jain.

Dr. Scott R. Stroud

Dr. Scott R. Stroud from University of Texas at Austin has long been interested in Indian philosophy and has recently become very intrigued by Jaina thought. Given that his field is rhetoric, he is very interested in what Jaina sources and concepts have to give us concerning our ideas of non-violent communication, argument, and persuasion. He has written a historical piece unpacking the sort of pluralism resident in anekantavada and syadvada followed by a constructive piece mating his work in American pragmatism with anekantavada as a method of avoiding one-sided partisan views. Now he is interested in incorporating the principles of anuvrat into his on-going research on how we ought to communicate with others in a flourishing society.

Dr. Shanta Ram Maley

Just imagine how our world will look like if garbage could be converted into something very useful & beautiful and if there is no fear of contracting any disease because of the garbage dump lying just next door. There is one person who has made this possible and very workable at only a fraction of the cost which otherwise is invariably high with such kind of projects. He has created a virtual paradise from mountains of waste. Dr. S.R. Maley is a doctorate in Agronomy and has worked in the field of Agronomy and Municipal Solid Waste Management for the past 39 years at various organizations, such as Excel Industries Ltd., Lupin Laboratories and Hindustan Lever Ltd. He is known for his pioneer role in giving shape to Municipal Solid Waste Management in India and appeared in the popular social issue talk show "Satyamev Jayate" hosted by Aamir Khan.

Dr. Shin Fujinaga

Saptabhangi or a statement with seven sentences sometimes represents the whole Jaina philosophical doctrine and logical thoughts. A Japanese scholar, Dr. Shin Fujinaga checked the logical value of the Saptabhangi by exploring its relationship with anekantavada or the Jaina theory of multi-face reality. He was a scholarship student sponsored by Government of India to study at the school of Languages, Gujarat University. He went ahead completing his M.A. and PhD. in Indian & Chinese philosophy. Now, his works are referred in research all over the world and he currently presides over the Society for Jaina Studies, Kyoto.

Ms. Shivani Bothra

Graduated from Florida International University, Miami in April 2013 with a MA in Religious Studies, Ms. Shivani Bothra's thesis was a critical analysis of the Anuvrat Movement. Her previous MA was from Jain Vishva Bharati Institute, Ladnun in Science of Living, Yoga and Preksha Meditation. Due to her commitment to academic and scholarly work in Jainism she is affiliated to various institutions. She has been the program coordinator of the International Summer School for Jain Studies (ISSJS) since 2009. Recently, her article on the Anuvrat Movement was included in Jainpedia. She is also a contributor to the Swiss online magazine - "The joy of asceticism". Presently, she is enrolled in a doctoral study program from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

Prof. Tara Sethia

Dr. Tara Sethia is a Professor of History and founder & Director of Ahimsa Center at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. On this Center, she has established a degree program for a Minor in Non-violence Studies. She is also the Director of Center's national summer institutes on Non-violence for K-12 educators. Professor Sethia received her Ph.D. in History from University of California, Los Angeles and M. A. in History from Rajasthan University. She is a recipient of several grants, awards and honors including Gold and Silver Medals from the University of Rajasthan. She has served on the executive board of the World History Association and the SAT II World History Committee hosted by the Educational Testing Service and the College Board. She has also served as a consultant to the California Department of Education and the British Broadcasting Service.

Dr. Thomas Daffern

He is a philosopher, lecturer, teacher, historian, poet, esotericist, author, musician, thinker, educator, druid, mediator, consultant and a peace studies specialist. These are adjectives associated with none other than Mr. Thomas Daffern. He is the director of International Institute of Peace Studies and Global Philosophy. His academic background includes degrees in world history, with specialist work on the history of ideas. He also studied philosophy and religion and has also pioneered the interfaith education at a senior level. He has long advocated the path to world peace through intellectual, philosophical and spiritual reconciliation.

Ms. Tine Vekemans

When coming to the Ghent University in 2003, it was mainly Ms. Tine Vekemans's love for language and the desire to learn something entirely new that motivated her to choose Eastern Languages and Cultures. She discovered the wonderful world of Hindi, Sanskrit, and Arabic. As time went by, she got more and more interested in modern South-Asian politics and religions and in South-Asian Migrant communities. She graduated in 2007 with a master thesis titled Hindutva and the Dalits, analyzing the ways in which the Hindu religious-nationalist movements try to incorporate the lower castes and outcasts. After graduating, Tine worked in the migration-sector as a translator and as an intercultural advisor. It is from that backdrop that she started her PhD-research into the development of diasporic networks within South-Asian migrant-communities and the effect of these changing networks on cultural identity and religion.The case she researches is the Jain-diaspora.

Shivani Wazir Pasrich

a versatile Economics Honours & Law graduate, an Actress and Odissi dancer, is actively involved with social concerns. She has been working for the cause of safe motherhood with the White Ribbon Alliance. She is a member of the Executive Committee for the Delhi Society for the Welfare of Special Children and is a member of the governing body of Ekatwam - Together for Epilepsy. In 2009, Shivani was awarded 'Pride of the Nation' and in 2013 she received the Universal Humanity Award. She was also the recipient of the India Foundation award for excellence in her field and the Women Achievers recognition from TIE. Her play, "Draupadi - Will my spirit move on?" addressed the issues related to women's empowerment and funds raised were used for the Breast Cancer Patients Benefit Foundation. Her conservation project, "I am the Tiger" enjoys multiple initiatives. Having travelled extensively, currently they are on a multi city tour to spread awareness about conservation through performance, art and sport. Shivani Wazir Pasrich has also made a film, "Girls are Gold" which speaks about eradicating discrimination against the girt child in our society.
