Mahavir Jayanti marks the birthday of the 24th Tirthankara Mahavira (~ 599 BC), founder of the modern Jain religion and the last in the galaxy of 24 Tirthankaras.

Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated every year on the thirteenth day of the rising moon of Chaitra, 1st month of the Hindu year (March - April).
