Tradition of the Tirthankars
Tirthankar means the founder of the Tirtha. The fourfold order consisting of monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen is called the Tirtha. Its founders are called tirthankaras. Tirthankara is also called god, Jina, Arhat or God of Gods in this age. Tirthankara Rishabha promulgated Jain religion already existing since eternity. He was the first tirthankar and was followed by twenty three Tirthankars like Ajitnath etc. Tirthankara Mahavira was the last tirthankara of this age. The names of twenty four tirthankaras are as follows:-
