The Parshwanath Swamy Digambar Jain temple at Makodu, a silent village in the Periyapatna taluk of Mysuru district is in a very dilapidated condition and demands immediate attention of the community. The preparations are under way for the renovation of this temple & its premises.
“Makodu Bhagawan Sri Parshwanath Digambar Jain Seva Trust” has been constituted in connection with this. His Holiness Swasti Sri Bhuvanakeerthi Bhattarakha Swamiji, the pontiff of Kanakagiri Jain Math is the chief patron of the trust. The temple’s renovation will be taken up by Sri Dharmasthala Dharmotthana Trust being guided by Dr.D.Veerendra Heggade of Dharmasthala.
Temple’s History - We cannot find any inscriptions or other historical sources mentioning about the temple’s antiquity. However, looking at its structure and heritage of the place we can conclude that the temple might have been constructed during the Hoysala period (around 12 -13th Century).
Temple’s Structure - Externally it has an attractive adhishtana (foundation). Internally the temple has a multi pillared wide hall (navaranga) leading to a smaller hall (sukanasi) and the sanctum sanctorum (garbagriha). The sanctum sanctorum houses a 5 feet 9 inches high ruined idol of Lord Parshwanath in the Kayotsarga (standing) posture. The idol is flanked by Dharanendra Yaksha, and Padmavati Yaksi. It has an attractively carved arch enclosure surrounding it. The idol has seven hoods and its face is mutilated.The idol has been chipped off intermittently all throughout its length. The Navaranga and Garbagriha have attractive carvings along its roof.

Expenses Related to the Temple’s Renovation- Temple’s Renovation (to be taken up by Sri Dharmasthala Dharmotthana Trust) Rs. 29 Lakhs.

- Estimated expenditure towards providing the required facilities during the course of renovation - Rs. 3 Lakhs.

Renovation Journey So Far & WWW.JAINHERITAGECENTRES.COM's (JHC) Efforts in restoring the temple
The renovation journey of this temple begins from the mid-1990s and spans over 2 decades. The below write up will give you all an idea of the efforts in this connection.
Efforts to restore this temple have been on since the mid-1990s. Jains of Saligrama (a small town near Makodu in Mysuru district) had formed a committee for the rennovation of this temple. However, for some reasons things did not materialise. Sometime in 2013 while speaking to Nitin H.P. (founder & Executive director of JHC) Sri N.Prasanna Kumar the vice president of Digambar Jain Samaj, Mysuru mentioned about the existance of Makodu Jain temple. This led to a field visit by JHC's team. On 13th October 2013 JHCs team led by Nitin H.P. visited Makodu along with Dr.H.A.Parshwanath (co-founder of JHC), Brahmanand Chipre & Priyanka Chipre and had put up a write up on JHC. There was good response from the Jains world over along with local Jains at Mysuru. Around the same time Jains of Mahavir Jain Sangh, Vimanapura, Bengaluru had also visited Makodu and had decided to do some voluntary service at the temple for restoring it by pooling in some amount. However, on hearing this Sri Prasanna Kumar and Nitin convinced the members of HAL Jain Sangh to join hands with them as any efforts in a small scale would not help in the long run. Further initiatives from Sri Prasanna Kumar resulted in the formation of Makodu Bhagawan Sri Parshwanath Digambar Jain Seva Trust. One remarkable aspect of this trust is that it has members of all the above teams who had ventured for this initiative. It has members of Saligrama Jain Samaj, Mysuru Jain Samaj, members of JHC's team & HAL Jain Sangh.
His Holiness Swasti Sri Bhuvanakeerthi Bhattarakha Swamiji, the pontiff of Kanakagiri Jain Math has been the guiding in our journey and Dr.D.Veerendra Heggade of Dharmasthala has assured us to take up the renovation of this temple from Sri Dharmasthala Dharmotthana Trust being guided by him. The Dharmotthana Trust has a tie-up with the Government of Karnataka where in both of them will invest up to 80% (40% of the amount from either of them) of the total cost (with a maximum ceiling of Rs. 20 lakhs) and the remaining amount will have to be paid by the local committee. Further, once the remaining amount is paid from local committee the Dharmotthana Trust will coordinate with the Government & the local trust and take up the overall operations of the renovation work and ensure all work in completed without any problem.
All these efforts have brought us so far and have initiated the renovation of this temple. Since the renovation is happening after a lot of efforts, the trustees felt that it is good to develop proper facilities around the temple's premises so as to ensure there are facilities for the priest's family and devotees visiting the temple. This has led to a huge estimate of Rs. 26 Lakhs (about USD 40 thousand) in addition to the Rs. 20 Lakhs being paid from Dharmotthana Trust & Govt. of Karnataka.
Sri Gunapal Jain (trust's president), Sri Padma raj (trust's secretary), Sri Santhosh (trust's treasurer) and Sri Rajesh Jain (one of the trustee) of Mysuru have played a pivotal role in the journey so far.
Writing the above story or designing the posters in Kannada and English have taken just a couple of days within the four walls of my house, but the journey so far hasn't been that easy. It has been very challenging and I am aware we have a herculean task ahead. Though JHC has been working in the Jainism field since 2002 this is our 1st initiative for JHC and me personally wherein we are directly involved in a temple renovation project.
