Grand 153rd Birth Anniversary celebrations of Shri VirChand Raghav Ji Gandhi At 100 + places across Jain Sanghs in India & abroad - August 25, 2016
For those of you who have not heard about “The GANDHI Before GANDHI “Shri Virchand Raghav Gandhi (VRG), born Aug 25, 1864 was a Great Jain Scholar, linguist, Patriot, Humanitarian, Reformer, Philosopher. The 1st ever graduate and a Barrister at Law, among the Jain community, he represented as a Jain Delegate on behalf of invitee Acharya Vijayanandsuriji (aka Atmanandji) at 1st ever Parliament of World Religions held in Chicago, USA in 1893.
From 1893-1901, in his 3 long visits to US and Europe, he gave about 535 lectures on Jainism & the Great Indian Culture. He was invited to speak at various International Conferences on Real estate and Commerce. He had defended the 2 Great Jain Tirths namely Shri Samed Shikharji (Bihar) where he got a Piggery (slaughterhouse) closed and at Shri Shatrunjay Tirth (Palitana,Guj) where he the got Pilgrimage Tax abolished. In 1896, during the worst Famine in Bengal, raised a princely sum equal to Rs 40,000/- along with a ship load of Food Grains from the USA. In 2009, India released a Postage Stamp in his honor.
