In response to a letter, sent by the eminent lawyer and the former Indian ambassador of U.K., Dr. L.M. Singhvi, to the assembly of selcted Jains for unity of Jainism, H.H. has sent the following massage:
"The talk on unity of Jainism is going on from the last half century. Before this, something was heard, but there was no progress. The main hurdle for unity was the celebration of Samvatsari Prav. My experience is that it is difficult to have unity on rules and regulations. When differences in rules and regulations become a matter of subject, talks are finished. Samvatsari is a part of the character, so all cannot agree on its date. When we are thinking of unity, we should have a new base for the talks. An organisation, strong and accepted by all, has to be established in the first place. The following five points should be taken into consideration:
- Safety of existence for Jain Religion
- Safety of existence for Jain community
- Proper planning of spreading the teachings of Lord Mahavira and his philosophy
- Safety of the Agams and other literature
- Development of cooperation and amity in and between all Jain sects
There are many more maxims for the unity; this list may be expended after reflections and consultations. When unity efforts would continue for a longer period, then we will reach our goal. It is very important for the sake of Jain unity to have a group of fully surrendered persons, to move the things in future.
Your starting of the efforts has got its value; I want the thinkers of Jain religion value the same.”
