Jain Samaj Manchester
A four day course of training on non-violence was conducted under the guidance of Samani Prasanna Pragya ji and Samani Rohit Pragya ji from Wednesday 24th to Saturday 27th March.
The four day course was attended by 25 people, including 3 youth participants. There were 5 two hour sessions. There were two sessions on Saturday.
Each session started with the recitation of Ahimsa Song - Shanti ka Sandesha, followed by lectures on different topics, such as meaning and concept of non-violence, relationship between peace and non-violence, roots of violence, economics of violence, non-violence and the vision of a sustainable world & vegetarianism and veganism.
After the lecture, we had question/answer sessions and all the participants asked various questions. The last 45 minutes we used to practise meditation.
On Saturday evening, we had Mr Alex Sanderson from The Vegetarian Society of the UK, who explained about the benefits of vegetarianism and how they are related to non-violence.
A small booklet of vows was provided to all participants so that they could take a small resolution to apply non-violence in their day-to-day life. All the participants enjoyed the training course.
Mahaveer Janma Kalyanak was also celebrated on Sunday 28th March, with the attendance of over 300 members. The program started with prayers and stavans by the Samanijis, followed by a cultural programme by children from Arhat Touch, which is a pathshala run by Jain Samaj Manchester under the guidance of Pujya Rakeshbhai Zaveri of Shrimad Rajchandra Ashram, Dharampur. There was also a small skit performed by the youth under the guidance of Pujya Saminijis.
There was also a cheque of £11, 768 presented by Lord Mayor Alison Firth on behalf of Jain Samaj Manchester to RSPCA for the charity programme done by their members in September 2009.
The whole programme was organised by the religious secretary, Mrs Sarojben Patel.
