Report On The Seminar On “Income Tax Searches & Surveys - Practical Aspects” Organised By Terapanth Professional Forum (TPF) - Kolkata Branch On 21st May 2011 At Mahasabha Bhavan, Kolkata.

A seminar on the subject of "Income Tax Searches & Surveys- Practical Aspects" was organised by TPF Kolkata Branch on 21st May 2011 at the Bhikshu Granthagar of Mahasabha Bhavan, Kolkata wherein nearly 55 Professionals and invitees took part.

Guest Speakersfor the Seminar were Shri Sumer Mal Surana, Advocate and Prof. Narayan Prasad Jain, two leading Income Tax Consultants of Kolkata to deliver informative and practical notes on the subject.

The Meet began with the holy chanting of Namaskar Mahamantraby Vikram Chandalia, Secretary of TPF Kolkata Branchin chorus with all the present. Vikram Chandalia also anchored the seminar. In his opening remarks, he shared his childhood experience of his family facing Income Tax officials and explained how a person following spiritual and religious discourses and practising them in life remain firm and undeterred with mental strength to overcome all such hurdles.

Shri Prakash Chand Maloo, Kolkata Branch Presidentwelcomed guests and other participants. In his address, he briefed the house about the agony during Income Tax Searches and Surveys and set the tone for the speakers to share their views on the subject. He also urged non-member participating Professionals to become member of the Forum and bring more memberships along with them.

In his brief and crisp address, Shri Prakash Baid, TPF National Vice President-Eastinformed the house about the Vision and Mission of Terapanth Professional Forum.

Shri Sushil Jain (Choraria), TPF National Joint Secretaryreminded the house of the expectations of Late Acharya Shri Mahapragya Jiand present Acharya Shri Mahashraman Jifrom Terapanth Professional Forum. He also informed the house about national level activities and plan of actions of Terapanth Professional Forum.

In his address, Shri Bhanwar Lal Singhi, General Secretary-Shree Jain Swetamber Terapanthi Mahasabha, congratulated TPF-Kolkata Branch on organizing such an informative seminar and wished for more such useful activities from Terapanth Professional Forum.

Brief introduction of the speakers were placed by Shri Dilip Maroti, Vice President-TPF Kolkata Branch and Shri Maanvardhan Baid, National Convenor-TPF Networking Committee.

In his presentation, Prof. Narayan Prasad Jainbriefed the audience about major differences between Income Tax Search and Survey. He informed the house about the Powers and limitations of Income Tax Officers while conducting Searches or Surveys. He also threw light on the Rights and Duties of the Assessee while facing Search or Survey. His practical tips on Tax Planning were very well received by all the present.

Shri Sumermal Suranapresented his views on the major provisions of Income Tax Act governing Searches and Surveys. With insights from various Supreme Court and High Court cases, he elaborated on the implications of relevant Income Tax provisions. He gave stress on working within the boundaries of Income Tax Act so as to avoid Searches or Surveys leading to unnecessary harassment and mental tension.

In the Open Session, many participants raised their queries on various practical issues. Both the learned speakers were well on the spot in answering the queries and thus enhancing the general confidence in the house about Income Tax Searches and Surveys.

Mementos were also presented to Shri Sumer Mal Surana by Shri Rajesh Ghorawat, Executive Committee Member-TPF Kolkata Branch and to Prof. Narayan Pd Jain by Shri Indraj Mal Nahata, Treasurer-TPF Kolkata Branch.
