Anyatva Anupreksha (contemplation of the difference between soul and body):Making resolutions, giving suggestions, or auto-suggestions are all part of anupreksha. It is important to use these tools in the practice of meditation. Without anupreksha, it is difficult to succeed in the practice of meditation. Among many anuprekshas, one is anyatva anupreksha — experiencing the difference between matter and soul, and living and non-living. With the experience of anyatva it becomes easier to engage the mind in the practice of meditation. Without it, the mind is too fickle to engage in the practice of meditation.
One of the benefits of pranayam is that the mind achieves the ability to concentrate, which is known as dhaarana. Dhaarana means concentrating the mind on any part of the body or on any of the psychic centers like taijas kendra, anand kendra etc. As an illustration, dhaarana is like tying a calf with a rope to the post which was jumping all over the place. After tying, its movement is significantly restrained.
The stability of the movement is dhaarana. In the Sankhya philosophy, anyatva anupreksha is known as vivekakhyaati (awakening the wisdom) which means understanding the difference between — purush (consciousness) and prakriti (matter). In the Jain philosophy anyatva anupreksha means understanding the difference between the matter and the soul. The practice of pranayam enhances the experience of separateness (bhed vigyaan) between the soul and matter.
