How to Avoid Duality?

The question is — how should a person living with duality, avoid it? This is where meditation can help, not meditation by itself but the family of meditation can help combating the dualities.

Let us take an example of duality in nature too hot or too cold. It is difficult to tolerate extreme temperatures. If one wants to practice meditation under such a climate, it is natural that the attention will go to the hot or cold temperature first and it will be difficult to focus on the soul, or on winning over the senses or winning over the mind. Without winning over environmental dualities, it is difficult to do meditation.

Maharishi Patanjali has suggested aasanas as a way to win over such dualities of nature. Aasanas make the dualities ineffective. In other words, aasana empowers the endurance power so that dualities do not disturb as much. The first time when a person sits down for meditation, he or she is not able to concentrate. Instead of meditation he or she experiences painful sensations in the legs or feet,
perhaps a feeling of numbness.

These feelings tend to dominate the mind. After practicing aasanas, the same person gradually develops an ability to overcome such sensations and is able to sit in aasana for one hour and even two hours. As the ability to sit in aasana develops, the sensations from duality of nature lessen. Sitting straight, without any stress and without feeling any pain is possible through mastering aasanas. Without the practice of aasana, if one starts the practice of meditation, the feeling of pain will distract the attention and one will not be able to progress beyond those sensations.
