Kolkata 25.10.2024:

My guru, Prof. Dayanand Bhargava

Prof. Dayanand Bhargawa was a scholar of distinction with proficiency not just in Vedantic scriptures but also in other philosophies including Jain philosophy. His literary contribution as head of the department in various Institutes and numerous research publications are definitely an invaluable contribution and will be beneficial in the future for generations to come.

As his student for over 25 years I have had the privilege of learning from him as well his life.

He excelled in the knowledge of ancient scriptures, but his outlook was always forward looking and progressive. Neither did he restrict himself to one sect or philosophy, nor did he give undue importance to rituals and traditions. He believed that spirituality is above religion and we should understand its core essence and apply it in our daily lives. The emphasis on “Aachar” or behaviour was evident in his lifestyle and he set a living example for me.

In all the years that I have known him, I have never seen him sitting idle or wasting any time in small talks. Even when his health was deteriorating he was constantly working on articles and preparing for Seminars. He believed in sharing his knowledge as much as he could and touching lives in a new and novel way. Whoever came in contact with him was nourished with his experience, knowledge and discipline.

He was a man of astute character and righteousness, never hesitating to speak the truth without any bias. A perfectionist and disciplinarian himself, he would not accept any  shortcomings and would immediately highlight areas of improvement. This approach helped his students excel in their endeavours and inspired them to reach greater heights.

A “guru” literally means one who dispels darkness and guides others towards the light of knowledge, and I have been blessed to be in guiding light of my guru, Prof. Dayanand Bhargawa. I bow down in heartfelt gratitude for his invaluable support and inspiration that has truly transformed my life.

May his departed soul continue to enlighten other lives.

Forever indebted,

Dr. Manju Nahata
